HOW TO SWIM THROUGH WINTER

Now the off-season’s here, what kit do you need for pool and chilly open-water swims?

1) SWIMSUIT

Choose a suit that fits well for pool training – it should be close fitting to avoid mid-session adjustments, but not be too tight. Look for chlorine- resistant fabric for longevity and opt for straps that sit away from your shoulder blades to allow full range of movement. We love the Funkita Wingtip suit (£41.95).


2) JAMMERS

For the chaps, you can go for a set of budgie- style trunks, but most will opt for jammers. These should be close-fitting on the legs to avoid drag, but have a comfortable waistband, preferably with an adjustable cord for comfort. Again, fabric should be chlorine-resistant for longevity. Speedo’s Endurance+ Slice (£41) are impressive.


3) GOGGLES

The good news when choosing pool goggles is they can be smaller and lower-profile than your open-water goggles, with less need for different tints. We love the new Tiger range from Zoggs (from £20), as they’re lightweight, comfortable and flexible yet low-profile and sleek. Mirrored lenses will help reflect glare from pool lights.


4) SWIM CAP

Not only does a cap help you slip through the water more easily and keep your hair off your face but it stops hair floating around in the water, which is pretty gross! Wear the cap from your last big race for poolside kudos, or there are various materials available on the market if you’re allergic to latex or have other needs, such as afro hair.
