However, they\u2019re not effective at creating change.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m going to describe several change strategies that are really effective in assisting the process of creating the change that you want.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Your body is lying to you<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The biggest challenge in creating change is that there is a massive disconnect between how you feel you\u2019re moving and how you\u2019re actually moving. Your body prefers to move in exactly the same way it has always been moving.<\/p>\n<p>Whenever you create change, your body isn\u2019t going to like it and it\u2019s going to create all sorts of \u2018alarms\u2019 that make movement feel really weird.\u00a0As a result, most triathletes will get freaked out by what their body is telling them and go back to their comfortable, yet ineffective skills.\u00a0Ignore these alarms!<\/p>\n<section class=\"&quot;highlight\"><div class=\"&quot;highlight__content\" editor-content=\"\"> <ul><li><strong><a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.220triathlon.com\/training\/swim-training\/how-to-reduce-excessive-kicking-when-swimming\/&quot;\">How to reduce excessive kicking when swimming<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.220triathlon.com\/training\/swim-training\/how-to-keep-track-of-your-swim-progress\/&quot;\">How to keep track of your swim progress<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.220triathlon.com\/training\/swim-training\/how-much-swimming-should-triathletes-do\/&quot;\">How much swimming should triathletes do?<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul><p> <\/p><\/div> <\/section><h2><strong>What you want to do vs. what you have to do<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>There\u2019s a difference between what\u2019s happening versus what you need to do to make it happen.\u00a0Let\u2019s say you pull your head to the right every time you breathe. It would make sense to try to \u2018keep it straight\u2019 when you breathe.<\/p>\n<p>However, if you actually want to keep straight, you\u2019re going to need to try to pull your head to the left to actually get it to stay straight.\u00a0The problem is that what you want to happen and what you have to do to make it happen aren\u2019t the same thing.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>You need to If you think you need to move your arm over six inches, you need to try to move it two feet. If you need to lower your head by three inches, make it feel like you\u2019ve lowered in 12 inches.<\/p>\n<p>Make it feel like you\u2019ve over-corrected the skill to the point where it\u2019s wrong and you\u2019re much more likely to make the change you\u2019re trying to make.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Make it feel wrong<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>If it feels right, you\u2019re doing it wrong.\u00a0 If it feels wrong, you\u2019re doing it right.\u00a0 When making a change, it\u2019s not an adjustment, it\u2019s an overhaul. As a result, instead of trying to make your new skill feel \u2018good\u2019, you need to try to make it feel wrong.<\/p>\n<p>Preferably, you want to make it feel really wrong. Remember that your body over-exaggerates the sensation of change.
