{"id":16521,"date":"2022-08-03T21:00:38","date_gmt":"2022-08-03T19:00:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.220triathlon.com\/?p=109470"},"modified":"2022-08-04T12:45:28","modified_gmt":"2022-08-04T10:45:28","slug":"world-triathlon-allow-transgender-women-to-compete-in-female-category","status":"publish","type":"rss_feed","link":"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/220triathlon\/rss_feed\/world-triathlon-allow-transgender-women-to-compete-in-female-category\/","title":{"rendered":"World Triathlon allow transgender women to compete in female category"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\"><\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Liz Barrett\n                \t\t<\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Wednesday, 03 August 2022 at 12:00 am<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p><strong>World Triathlon has approved a new transgender policy that will allow transgender women to compete internationally in female pro or age-group categories.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>However, the new ruling, which comes into effect in 30 days\u2019 time, requires all transgender women to lower their testosterone levels for two years rather than one, as is the case now.<\/p>\n<p>They must also wait for at least four years after transitioning if they have previously competed as a male in any sporting competition rather than one.<\/p>\n<p>The decision comes almost a month after <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.220triathlon.com\/news\/british-triathlon-announce-new-open-category-for-male-and-transgender-athletes\/&quot;\"><strong>British Triathlon became\u00a0the first British sport to create an \u2018open\u2019 category<\/strong><\/a> for transgender athletes, banning transgender females from competing in elite and age-group female events.<\/p>\n<p>The move from the British governing body was then mirrored by swimming and rugby league.<\/p>\n<ul><li><strong><a class=\"&quot;standard-card-new__article-title&quot;\" href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.220triathlon.com\/news\/british-triathlon-answer-key-questions-on-new-transgender-policy\/&quot;\">British Triathlon answer key questions on new transgender policy<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><a class=\"&quot;standard-card-new__article-title&quot;\" href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.220triathlon.com\/news\/what-are-the-implications-of-british-triathlons-new-open-category\/&quot;\">What are the implications of British Triathlon\u2019s new open category?<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul><h2><strong>What does World Triathlon\u2019s Transgender Policy say?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>World Triathlon\u2019s policy states: \u201cTo compete in the female category in an elite or age-group triathlon competition, a transgender athlete must demonstrate that the concentration of testosterone in the athlete\u2019s serum has been less than 2.5 nmol\/L continuously for a period of at least 24 months.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlso, at least 48 months must have elapsed since the transgender athlete has competed as a male in any sporting competition\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>World Triathlon\u2019s policy was approved by the majority of the executive board, although notably its vice-president, Ian Howard, and president of the athletes\u2019 committee, Tamas Toth, voted against.<\/p>\n<p>World Triathlon President and IOC Member, Marisol Casado, said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are a small International Federation, but one that has always had inclusion and gender balance in our DNA. The Policy that we have just approved shows that we are prioritising the fairness principle but showing inclusiveness.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is fully aligned with the IOC\u2019s recommendation, and similar to what other IFs have done in the last months.
