Monthly menstruation can take a lot out of the body, and come with a string of PMS (premenstrual syndrome) grievances like cramping, bloating, <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.220triathlon.com\/training\/injuries\/why-do-i-feel-extremely-lethargic-the-week-of-my-period\/&quot;\">fatigue<\/a> and more.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Surely all that burns more calories, right? There must be a reason why we\u2019re reaching for the chocolate more during this time of month \u2013 we need energy!<\/p>\n<p>Actually, that\u2019s not strictly true. Science has found no link between the menstruation period and an increase in basal metabolic rate (how many calories you burn at rest per day).<\/p>\n<p>In fact, the opposite could be closer to the truth \u2013 if you suffer with painful periods then you\u2019re more likely to dial down on the exercise and reach for the comfort foods to get you through.<\/p>\n<ul><li><strong><a class=\"&quot;standard-card-new__article-title&quot;\" href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.220triathlon.com\/training\/women\/why-good-energy-balance-is-vital-for-female-triathletes\/&quot;\">Why good energy balance is vital for female triathletes<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul><p>While it\u2019s important to listen to your body, some studies have shown that the follicular phase (during a period up until ovulation) is when you\u2019re <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.220triathlon.com\/training\/women\/how-to-adapt-your-training-around-menstruation\/&quot;\"><strong>most primed to do intense and high-impact exercise<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This is due to a rise in oestrogen causing the body to have a higher pain threshold and be more primed for hard efforts.<\/p>\n<ul><li><strong><a class=\"&quot;standard-card-new__article-title&quot;\" href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.220triathlon.com\/training\/women\/how-to-biohack-your-period-for-triathlon-performance\/&quot;\">How to biohack your period for triathlon performance<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul><p>The long and short of it?
