As a 23-year-old kinesiology student from California, her \u2018crawl\u2019 to the Ironman World Championship finish line in 1982 was broadcast on ABC\u2019s Wide World of Sports and caught the imagination of thousands.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Moss would later marry six-time winner <a href=\"&quot;\/news\/legends-of-tri-mark-allen\/&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Mark Allen<\/strong><\/a>, and although now divorced they remain good friends. Here\u2019s Julie in her own words\u2026<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What Kona means to Moss<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Hawaii is part of my DNA.<\/strong> I\u2019ve been coming to this island for 40 years to test myself. There\u2019s no indigenous part of me that should connect in this way, but coming back is like a pilgrimage.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In those final stages of the 1982 Ironman, I fought for belief in myself for maybe the first time.<\/strong> I\u2019d never been an athlete and had this opportunity to win something.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s such a great theme for triathletes, the idea that you\u2019re finding something within yourself that you haven\u2019t accessed before.<\/strong> You start stripping away the layers of who you think you should be, and discover who you are.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>1980s Kona kit<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>I was ahead of the time wearing a trucker hat in \u201982<\/strong> \u2013 because it was part of the free swag that [sponsors] Bud Lite handed out! My bike shoes were leather tie-ups with straps on the pedals. The bike was a regular 10-speed commuter bike I bought for around $250. A museum in the US recently asked for the kit!<\/p>\n<ul><li><strong><a class=\"&quot;standard-card-new__article-title&quot;\" href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.220triathlon.com\/gear\/triathlon\/the-craziest-triathlon-kit-we-spotted-in-kona\/&quot;\">The craziest triathlon kit we spotted in Kona 2022<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul><h2><strong>Repeating Kona mistakes<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>I famously thought I was a pro again in 2017 \u2013 and made the same mistakes!<\/strong> My goal was to win my age-group, but I got to T2 and packed up my gear.<\/p>\n<p><strong>As soon as I saw the look on my son, Mats\u2019, face, I thought \u2018Gee, I made a mistake.\u2019<\/strong> I knew right away I\u2019d be going back to try and qualify.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I went to New Zealand to qualify in 2018.<\/strong> Come Hawaii and Mats wasn\u2019t having the best day. We passed each other at an aid station, and I said: \u2018You\u2019re going to finish.\u2019 He replied: \u2018Yes\u2019. We were both deep in it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I loved that feeling of communicating with my son as you would a fellow racer.<\/strong> Seeing him waiting at the finish line with Mark [Allen], there was nothing to top it.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Developing the sport<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>I\u2019m on the board of directors for the Ironman Foundation<\/strong>, an athlete ambassador for Hoka and was also the co-captain of the USA for PTO\u2019s recent Collins Cup.<\/p>\n<p><strong>These days it\u2019s less about racing but more about being involved in the development of the sport.<\/strong> I\u2019m very excited for <a href=\"&quot;\/news\/reports-ironman-to-move-2023-mens-world-champs-away-from-kona\/&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\"><strong>the first all-women\u2019s wave of Kona next year<\/strong><\/a>.
