Interactive fitness equipment maker Peloton says that the trend is here to stay.<\/p>\n<p>Demand for their bikes rose so much during the pandemic that many customers had to wait months for their deliveries.<br\/>\nAlthough this backlog has now subsided, sales continued to soar, up 141% in the first three months of 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Company founder and CEO John Foley thinks it\u2019s inevitable that technology-driven home fitness will become more dominant, calling the idea of going to a gym \u201ca broken model of yesteryear\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>And yet on the flipside, research from Penn State University found that exertion and enjoyment levels were higher during a live class in the gym versus the exact same workout followed digitally at home.<\/p>\n<p>Despite doing the same class, participants\u2019 average heart rate \u2028was 14% higher during the gym class, and participants rated the gym-based workout as 13% \u2028more enjoyable and 14% more satisfying than the digital workout.<\/p>\n<section class=\"&quot;highlight\"><div class=\"&quot;highlight__content\" editor-content=\"\"> <p><strong>Top tips for home gym sessions<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2022 If you\u2019re on a tight budget, invest in some cheap equipment (e.g. <a href=\"&quot;\/gear\/triathlon\/training-kit-triathlon\/best-resistance-bands\/&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\"><strong>resistance bands<\/strong><\/a>).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Research health and fitness apps\/programmes and choose one that\u2019s right for you (whether you\u2019re building strength or wanting to compete for an event, for example).<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Agree on a time with your partner\/family\/roommate when you won\u2019t be disturbed.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Create a combined routine of resistance and cardio training \u2013 i.e cardio (run or <a href=\"&quot;\/training\/what-is-high-intensity-interval-training-hiit\/&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\"><strong>HIIT<\/strong><\/a> session, for example), lower body, upper body, core,\u00a0boxing, etc.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Pick up a cheap <a href=\"&quot;\/gear\/bike\/accessories\/turbo-trainers\/best-turbo-trainers-reviewed\/&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\"><strong>turbo trainer<\/strong><\/a>,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"&quot;\/gear\/bike\/best-budget-spin-bikes\/&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\">spin bike<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0or <a href=\"&quot;\/gear\/best-budget-rowing-machine\/&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\"><strong>rowing machine.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p> <\/p><\/div> <\/section><h2><strong>New year, new gym<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>And now we find ourselves at the start of another new year \u2013 the most popular time to sign up to a gym membership. But we\u2019re now also slap bang in the middle of a cost of living crisis, so many of us are once again left with no choice but to turn to the home environment for our \u2018gym\u2019 sessions.<\/p>\n<p>But that\u2019s no bad thing, as I\u2019ve attempted to address with my list of pros and cons to getting a sweat on from your living room below (note, more pros than home gym or investing in machines and equipment, it might have an initial upfront cost that is higher than a gym membership but in the long-term it will be more cost effective for you.<\/li>\n<li>Flexibility \u2013 Fitness at home can be a lot easier to fit in whether you\u2019re working from home or a busy stay-at-home parent.<\/li>\n<li>Gains \u2013 Regular <a href=\"&quot;\/training\/run-training\/home-workouts-how-to-improve-your-run-in-your-home\/&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\"><strong>short workouts<\/strong><\/a> (whether HIIT or resistance training targeting specific areas) can have just as much impact on improved cardiovascular health, fat burn, and building lean muscle as a gym workout.<\/li>\n<li>No stress \u2013 You don\u2019t have to worry about booking into a popular class, waiting until midnight to find that a slow internet connection has cost you that place.<\/li>\n<li>Non-communal \u2013 No shared locker rooms and showers or awkward towel dances to avoid exposure!<\/li>\n<li>No queues \u2013 No more waiting for your favourite cardio or weight machine, they\u2019re all yours for the taking.<\/li>\n<li>No self-consciousness \u2013 You can roll out of bed and rock up to your workout in your PJs if you want.<\/li>\n<li>No intimidation \u2013 No gym posers, testosterone bravado, sexist remarks from male gym goers or instructors shouting at you that \u2018You\u2019ve got to earn those calories, ladies!\u2019<\/li>\n<li>Your playlist \u2013 You can listen to your own tunes, no more headbanging hard-core dance music drilling into your brain during a sprint or heavy lift.<\/li>\n<li>Healthier eating \u2013 Quick access to your own kitchen and cheaper healthy food options at your disposal.<\/li>\n<li>Less <a href=\"&quot;\/training\/injuries\/how-to-avoid-infection-as-an-athlete\/&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\"><strong>germ-spreading<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 Let\u2019s be honest, how many people actually properly wipe down their equipment after they\u2019ve used it in the gym?!<\/li>\n<\/ul><h2><strong>The cons of working out at home<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul><li>Less space \u2013 No matter how much you kit out your house, it\u2019s never going to quite compete with the vast space and variety of equipment that a gym can offer.<\/li>\n<li>No professional support \u2013 There\u2019s no one to offer advice on technique or to correct your form, therefore an increased likelihood of injury and possibility that you won\u2019t be benefiting from a particular move as much.<\/li>\n<li>Higher household costs \u2013 Having to use your own water and energy will add to your monthly bills.<\/li>\n<li>Lone soldier \u2013 No social interaction and motivation from a partner or friend.
