In particular it tones the quadriceps, glutes, upper back, triceps, hamstrings and lower legs. It also helps to work and tone the chest muscles.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.220triathlon.com\/training\/swim-training\/how-does-swimming-tone-the-body\/\">How does swimming tone the body?<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.220triathlon.com\/training\/swim-training\/what-muscles-do-you-use-in-front-crawl\/\">What muscles do you use in front crawl?<\/a><\/strong><strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul><h2><strong>How breaststroke tones your upper body muscles\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The catch phase is a crucial part of breaststroke and predominantly uses the pectoral muscles (which connect the chest\u00a0to the bones of the upper arm and shoulder) and the latissimus dorsi (the largest muscle in the upper body) to sweep the arms inwards against the water. This movement is also assisted by the following arm muscles, the biceps brachii, brachialis and brachioradialis.<\/p>\n<p>The deltoids, chest muscles and triceps help extend the arms after they\u2019ve returned to the swimmer\u2019s side following the catch phase to start the stroke again.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>How breaststroke tones your leg muscles<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>When you extend the legs in the downward phase of the stroke, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.220triathlon.com\/training\/injuries\/why-is-quad-strength-important-for-triathletes\/\">quadriceps<\/a> work with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.220triathlon.com\/training\/injuries\/why-is-glute-strength-important\/\">glutes<\/a>, while the <span data-mce-mark=\"1\">\u00a0adductor muscles are responsible for bringing the legs together\u00a0<\/span>once they\u2019ve reached their widest point.<\/p>\n<p>During the recovery phase the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.220triathlon.com\/training\/injuries\/hamstrings-what-they-are-and-why-theyre-important\/\">hamstring muscles<\/a> (<span data-mce-mark=\"1\">the biceps femoris, semimembranosus, and semitendinosus, which sit at the back of the thigh), the sartorius (the body\u2019s longest muscle, which runs diagonally from the hip to the inside of the tibia bone on the lower leg), and gracilis (the thigh\u2019s most superficial muscle) help the knee flex and bring the feet toward the swimmer\u2019s bottom.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.220triathlon.com\/training\/swim-training\/breaststroke-technique-for-triathletes\/\">Breaststroke technique for triathletes<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.220triathlon.com\/training\/swim-training\/how-to-improve-your-breaststroke\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>How to improve your breaststroke<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p> <\/body><\/html>\n<hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p> Breaststroke is a great workout for the whole body.
