{"id":24632,"date":"2023-08-06T11:46:00","date_gmt":"2023-08-06T09:46:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.220triathlon.com\/?p=146118"},"modified":"2023-08-06T12:39:52","modified_gmt":"2023-08-06T10:39:52","slug":"gbs-lucy-byram-i-just-thought-id-attack-the-bike-and-see-where-i-ended-up","status":"publish","type":"rss_feed","link":"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/220triathlon\/rss_feed\/gbs-lucy-byram-i-just-thought-id-attack-the-bike-and-see-where-i-ended-up\/","title":{"rendered":"GB\u2019s Lucy Byram: \u201cI just thought I\u2019d attack the bike and see where I ended up\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\"> GB\u2019s Lucy Byram wasn\u2019t sure whether she would finish the run leg in the PTO US Open, but ended up achieving result of her career to date <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Tim Heming\n                \t\t<\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Sunday, 06 August 2023 at 09:46 AM<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body> <p><strong>Britain\u2019s Lucy Byram admitted that a hip injury that stopped her run training heading into the PTO US Open gave her the mindset to achieve a career-best result of fourth place in Milwaukee.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI\u2019ve not been running for three weeks and didn\u2019t know whether I\u2019d be able to finish, so I just thought I\u2019d attack the bike and see where I ended up,\u201d the 23-year-old from Leeds admitted after the race.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Such was Byram\u2019s firepower over the flat, fast, seven\u2013lap 80km bike course in Wisconsin, that in a stellar field including Canadian time-trial champion <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.220triathlon.com\/news\/who-is-paula-findlay\/\">Paula Findlay<\/a><\/strong>, only eventual champion <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.220triathlon.com\/news\/athletes\/who-is-taylor-knibb\/\">Taylor Knibb<\/a><\/strong> rode faster.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It left the GB triathlete reaching T2 in a lofty second position and with Knibb 90sec up the road, it was only Australia\u2019s <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.220triathlon.com\/news\/athletes\/who-is-ashleigh-gentle\/\">Ashleigh Gentle<\/a><\/strong> and Canada\u2019s Findlay who were able to get the better of her over the 18km final leg as Byram held off Holly Lawrence for fourth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI managed to make it around the run, thankfully, so I\u2019m really happy,\u201d Byram, who started the sport with her twin sister aged eight, added. \u201cI definitely didn\u2019t think I\u2019d be able to hold off Holly at the end. With one lap [of five] to go she was only about 20sec behind and the last half lap I had to push really hard.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Byram also thanked training partner <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.220triathlon.com\/news\/athletes\/who-is-tom-bishop\/\">Tom Bishop<\/a><\/strong> for the support around the course, after Bishop had been forced out of his own race the previous afternoon due to a mechanical issue on the bike.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cHe was definitely helpful to keep me going,\u201d she explained. \u201cI could feel my hip a little bit but they kept cheering me on so it definitely helped.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Byram was 10th out of the water in 29:06 before laying siege on the 80km bike leg, clocking 1:55:31 and beginning to close down the gap to breakaway leader Knibb in the final kilometres. Post-race, she was even thanked by Findlay for the late surge that helped the Canadian grab a time buffer on the rest of the field, and eventual podium.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It was the latest result in a busy and impressive year for the emerging talent, who has already won three races, Clash Miami, Challenge Puerto Varas in Chile and Challenge Wales in Swansea \u2013 a title she defended from 2022.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Having climbed the PTO rankings to No 36 heading into the race, it also earned her $15,000 and put the disappointment of a DNF in the PTO European Open in Ibiza behind her.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Byram\u2019s coach, Jacob Tipper, said the result was a bonus although it didn\u2019t wholly exceed expectations. \u201cWe\u2019ve put loads of hard work in and I think it\u2019s been coming,\u201d Tipper said. \u201cIt was a matter of time. The numbers looked really strong over the winter, when training in Spain and aero testing afterwards.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe game plan was just to start getting used to PTO events and the environment for next year. It was a chance to be aggressive on the swim and the bike, and if she blew up it didn\u2019t really matter. Anything more was a bonus, but I had a suspicion we could also see a big result.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIn [the Challenge Championship] in Samorin [where Byram finished sixth] she probably should have had a better result but was not quite aggressive enough.
