{"id":24636,"date":"2023-08-05T16:21:59","date_gmt":"2023-08-05T14:21:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.220triathlon.com\/?p=146078"},"modified":"2023-08-06T13:39:55","modified_gmt":"2023-08-06T11:39:55","slug":"frodeno-on-top-but-rules-out-retirement-u-turn","status":"publish","type":"rss_feed","link":"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/220triathlon\/rss_feed\/frodeno-on-top-but-rules-out-retirement-u-turn\/","title":{"rendered":"Frodeno on top but rules out retirement u-turn"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\"> The 2008 Olympic champion and three-time Ironman world champion showed he can still compete with the best in Milwaukee <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Tim Heming\n                \t\t<\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Saturday, 05 August 2023 at 14:21 PM<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body> <p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.220triathlon.com\/news\/athletes\/who-is-jan-frodeno\/\">Jan Frodeno<\/a> said he won\u2019t be rethinking his planned retirement for the end of 2023 despite achieving one of the most satisfying victories of his long career in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.220triathlon.com\/news\/jan-frodeno-wins-pto-us-open\/\">PTO US Open<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The 6ft 4 German who turned to long course racing in 2014 with unparalleled success took the tape ahead of Jason West and reigning Olympic champion <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.220triathlon.com\/news\/athletes\/who-is-kristian-blummenfelt\/\">Kristian Blummenfelt<\/a><\/strong> in Milwaukee, but said the effort needed to win his penultimate race can\u2019t carry on.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI don\u2019t know how many pieces of tape I\u2019ve got holding me together today,\u201d he said when interviewed post-race. \u201cI love it, I really do, but I\u2019m not sure my body would have another season in me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Frodeno, who turns 42 is under a fortnight, added: \u201cMentally, I\u2019m looking forward to other adventures, supporting my peers and [in reference to helping out at an aid station in last year\u2019s Ironman World Championship in Hawaii] handing out water cups when the girls are suffering out on the island.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Having been beaten into fourth place in the PTO European Open in May, and finished fourth in the Ironman European Championships in Hamburg, Frodeno only had a lowkey victory in Ironman 70.3 Andorra to show for a season where after two disrupted years he has finally been able to get back racing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI was nervous coming in,\u201d he admitted. \u201cI knew the preparation was good but I pushed it to the limit coming here, knowing the season is [now] two races long for me and that\u2019s how I wanted to finish my career \u2013 not just from a racing perspective, but seeing where my own physical limit is.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThat unfortunately meant that I trained around 40hr last week, missed the flight and spent a day at the airport, so I was pretty cooked the last few days. It\u2019s an emotional rollercoaster every single time and you\u2019re so invested in it as an athlete.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Frodeno was undergoing knee surgery 12 months ago and went on to say that despite the world-beating performances, he has the same doubts as any regular triathlete.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cOften we just think of the last session and how we performed is what we\u2019re worth as a human being. It\u2019s just the way it is. But as my wife said, it\u2019s a good thing to get as many sh*t sessions out beforehand, and then have a great race!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He also had a special word for Blummenfelt who has been outspoken about beating all-comers, including Frodeno, but despite all his other triathlon titles has yet to win a PTO Tour event.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cKristian has been so very vocal in the last few years and I know he beat me in Ibiza but he didn\u2019t win, so to me it doesn\u2019t count.
