{"id":24655,"date":"2023-08-09T21:04:38","date_gmt":"2023-08-09T19:04:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.220triathlon.com\/?p=146244"},"modified":"2023-08-09T21:39:53","modified_gmt":"2023-08-09T19:39:53","slug":"brownlee-hoping-tried-and-tested-path-will-trigger-paris-success","status":"publish","type":"rss_feed","link":"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/220triathlon\/rss_feed\/brownlee-hoping-tried-and-tested-path-will-trigger-paris-success\/","title":{"rendered":"Brownlee hoping \u201ctried and tested\u201d path will trigger Paris success"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\"> Three-time Olympic medallist Jonny Brownlee is looking to put injury and disappointing early season form behind him in next weekend\u2019s Paris test event <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Tim Heming\n                \t\t<\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Wednesday, 09 August 2023 at 19:04 PM<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body> <p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.220triathlon.com\/news\/athletes\/who-is-jonny-brownlee\/\">Jonny Brownlee<\/a> is hoping that four weeks training at a \u201ctried and tested\u201d altitude camp in St Moritz will give him the impetus he needs to perform at next weekend\u2019s Paris test event \u2013 and put him on the road to a fourth Olympic Games.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">With individual bronze (London 2012) and silver (Rio 2016), and mixed team relay gold from Tokyo \u20182020\u2019 already to his name, the 33-year-old flies to the holding camp at Libourne near Bordeaux on Monday with training partner and current World Triathlon Championship leader Beth Potter. They will join Loughborough-based <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.220triathlon.com\/news\/athletes\/who-is-alex-yee\/\">Alex Yee<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.220triathlon.com\/news\/athletes\/who-is-sophie-coldwell\/\">Sophie Coldwell<\/a><\/strong> who have already made the trip and are also on the start-list along with world Under-23 champion <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.220triathlon.com\/news\/athletes\/who-is-kate-waugh\/\">Kate Waugh<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.220triathlon.com\/news\/athletes\/who-is-olivia-mathias\/\">Olivia Mathias<\/a><\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe\u2019ll see if it works again,\u201d Brownlee said of the Switzerland location that was the prelude for previous Games\u2019 success, adding that having struggled with hamstring tendinopathy \u2013 \u201cliterally a pain in the arse\u201d \u2013 he now has a clean bill of health and ready to improve on his only podium of 2023, a runner-up spot in the European Championship in Madrid.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThankfully, my body is in far better shape now, and far healthier and hopefully I can show that in these next couple of races. It\u2019s not just Paris but the Grand Final and Super League racing as well.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>What if the test event becomes a duathlon?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">That contest in Madrid was turned into a duathlon after the water failed to pass the required standards for the swim. After recent heavy downpours, World Triathlon issued a memo earlier this week indicating that the same fate could befall the test event, which uses the River Seine in the heart of the city.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If it was switched to a run-bike-run then it would mean that the races would no longer count for automatic qualification purposes precluding Yee \u2013 as the only current individual Olympic medal holder racing following Georgia Taylor-Brown\u2019s calf tear \u2013 from ticking the box here.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThis is a road we\u2019ve been down many times before,\u201d Brownlee said. \u201cIn Rio, it was the water quality, and in Tokyo, it was the heat and the water temperature. The simple answer is that we\u2019ll prepare the best we can, hopefully for a triathlon, but if not we\u2019ll race what it needs to be.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe have to put all our trust and faith in World Triathlon and the organisers to make sure we have a safe environment to compete, whether that involves cancelling the swim or not.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">After sickness among athletes following last weekend\u2019s WTCS race in Sunderland, and the threat of swim cancellation here, Coldwell said triathlon is not alone in facing environmental challenges.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI think you see it across a whole range of sports,\u201d she said. \u201cThe F1 in Imola got cancelled because of flooding, and there\u2019s been issues with fires across the globe. There are a whole host of weather issues that are affecting sport.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWater quality has become an issue for tri, but hopefully these issues can be resolved and I know councils and local authorities are trying to put things in place to make it as safe as possible.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>What will the test event course be like?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The course, which has been <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.220triathlon.com\/news\/course-maps-revealed-for-triathlon-at-paris-2024-olympics\/\">designed to showcase many of Paris landmarks<\/a><\/strong> such as the Eiffel Tower and Arc de Triomphe, is an unknown quantity. \u201cI\u2019ve gone around on a Boris Bike [hire bike] if that counts,\u201d Yee said. \u201cBut I still find it hard to comprehend that there\u2019s going to be a triathlon held there.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThere\u2019s millions of tourists everywhere and cars going up and down like crazy, so it\u2019s hard to believe we\u2019re going to race in front of some of the most iconic sites in the world. Hopefully the test event will allow us to learn as much as we can about what it will be like next year.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Who will win the Paris test event?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">With many countries using the event in Paris as a selection race, the competition is expected to be fierce. \u201cThere is a whole roster of people you could put up for the podiums,\u201d Coldwell said. Potter, who leads the current standings from France\u2019s Cassandre Beaugrand and USA\u2019s Taylor Spivey, cites the French, Americans and fellow Brits as podium contenders, and picks out <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.220triathlon.com\/news\/taylor-knibb-takes-pto-us-open-title-in-milwaukee\/\">Saturday\u2019s PTO US Open winner and powerhouse cyclist Taylor Knibb<\/a><\/strong> too. \u201cKnibb is going to be on the start-line so it\u2019ll be interesting, I won\u2019t be totally surprised with any of those on the podium.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For the men\u2019s race, expectations are on another Yee versus Hayden Wilde showdown with the pair having two wins apiece on the series to date. \u201cAt the moment we somehow seem to find each other in the race no further than 10m apart, so we\u2019ll see if that continues,\u201d Yee said. \u201cBut there are 55-60 very capable athletes who I won\u2019t underestimate.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>What can triathlete learn from the test event?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It will be Brownlee\u2019s third test event after missing Rio with a stress fracture and he has fond memories of his third-place finish in London in 2011. At that time every other third-place male finisher in past Olympic test events had gone on to repeat the feat the following year. The omens rung true again for 2012.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI guess my advice is don\u2019t worry about it,\u201d he said. \u201cTry and qualify the best you can but don\u2019t worry if things don\u2019t go well because it can change. Kristian [Blummenfelt] was next to me when he crashed out in the test event and he went on to win [Olympic gold].\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cAlex won\u2019t mind me saying that he didn\u2019t have a great test event either, but did when it actually counted.
