That\u2019s why triathletes spend most of their training time performing endurance swim activities.\u00a0Longer is better!\u00a0<\/strong><\/p><p>And as most triathletes are aware, this can be a really effective strategy for cycling and running.\u00a0The longer you go, the better you get.\u00a0It\u2019s no surprise then that many triathletes take the same approach to their swimming.\u00a0The problem is that swimming isn\u2019t running or biking.<br\/>\u00a0<br\/>In contrast to running and cycling, swimming performance relies just as much on skill development as it does on fitness development.\u00a0And while long swimming will certainly develop your swim endurance, it can often do so at the expense of your skills.\u00a0 <\/p><p>That\u2019s because long, continuous swimming can either lead to practicing poor skills, or prevent you from <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.220triathlon.com\/training\/swim-training\/simple-tricks-to-help-triathletes-improve-their-swim-skills\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">learning better skills<\/a><\/strong>.\u00a0If you want to avoid that situation, you might want to take a different approach.<\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.220triathlon.com\/training\/swim-training\/how-to-get-out-of-a-swim-speed-rut\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">How to get out of a swim speed rut<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><h2 id=\"h-keep-swim-reps-short-to-improve-swim-endurance\"><strong>Keep swim reps short<\/strong> to improve swim endurance<\/h2><p>If you want to improve your endurance in the water, you actually want to perform shorter repetitions, typically 25 or 50m repetitions.\u00a0Swimming fast is all about possessing great skills, and the best way to develop great skills is to practise them.\u00a0 <\/p><p>Shorter distances might seem counterintuitive because they\u2019re not the long work typically associated with endurance practice.\u00a0However, it\u2019s because the distances are short that you can get a lot more practice with great swimming skill as you never get so tired that your skills fall apart.\u00a0 <\/p><p>And because efficiency in the water is what\u2019s key for speed, practising your skills really well is going to lead to more endurance.<\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.220triathlon.com\/training\/swim-training\/how-to-control-your-swim-to-build-endurance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">How to control your swim to build endurance<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><h2><strong>Shorter reps equal more feedback<\/strong><\/h2><p>Shorter repetitions allow you to get more <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.220triathlon.com\/training\/swim-training\/how-to-use-video-feedback-to-improve-your-swimming\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">feedback<\/a><\/strong>, more frequently.\u00a0You can get information about how fast you are and how many strokes you\u2019re taking.\u00a0Both of these numbers provide great feedback about the quality of your swimming.\u00a0 <\/p><p>In turn, you can use this information to re-affirm what you\u2019re doing successfully, or as motivation to change what you\u2019re doing.\u00a0And because you\u2019re getting this feedback with a lot more frequency, you\u2019re going to make change faster.\u00a0 <\/p><p>Further, because you\u2019ll be performing more repetitions due to the shorter distances, each repetition will feel like a fresh start, and you\u2019ll get that experience much more often.<\/p><h2>Short distances and more feedback equal <strong>better swimming<\/strong><\/h2><p>Because the distances are shorter, because you\u2019re getting more feedback, and because you\u2019re using that feedback to make changes, you\u2019re going to swim better.\u00a0And in contrast to biking and cycling, swimming is as much about skill as it is pure fitness.\u00a0 <\/p><p>As a result, you have to take a slightly different approach.\u00a0There needs to be an equal emphasis on skill development and fitness development.\u00a0 <\/p><p>The best way to do so is to do the same volume, but just keep the repetitions shorter.\u00a0That allows you to keep the same fitness benefit while improving the quality of your swimming.<\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.220triathlon.com\/training\/swim-training\/why-you-need-to-build-a-broader-base-fitness\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Why you need to build a broader base fitness<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><p><strong>Top image credit: <\/strong>Getty Images <br\/>\u00a0<br\/>\u00a0<br\/>\u00a0<\/p> <\/body><\/html>\n<hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Andrew Sheaff Published: Friday, 06 October 2023 at 14:04 PM Even the shortest triathlons are endurance events.
