{"id":25997,"date":"2023-10-10T14:51:35","date_gmt":"2023-10-10T12:51:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/85d848f8-5d52-4a94-86cd-66cbb05c8dc4"},"modified":"2023-10-10T15:47:12","modified_gmt":"2023-10-10T13:47:12","slug":"laura-siddall-super-grateful-for-hawaii-wildcard-after-brain-injury-in-brazil","status":"publish","type":"rss_feed","link":"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/220triathlon\/rss_feed\/laura-siddall-super-grateful-for-hawaii-wildcard-after-brain-injury-in-brazil\/","title":{"rendered":"Laura Siddall \u201csuper grateful\u201d for Hawaii wildcard after brain injury in Brazil"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\"><\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Tim Heming\n      <\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Tuesday, 10 October 2023 at 12:51 PM<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p>In the aftermath of the pandemic and rescheduling of events, Ironman eventually hosted two Ironman World Championships last year \u2013 <a href=\"\/news\/dominating-daniela-ryf-wins-fifth-ironman-world-championship\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>one in Utah in May<\/strong><\/a> and then <a href=\"https:\/\/www.220triathlon.com\/news\/chelsea-sodaro-wins-2022-ironman-world-championship-with-lucy-charles-barclay-in-second\"><strong>a return to the more familiar climes of Hawaii<\/strong><\/a> in October.<\/p><p>For 43-year-old Laura Siddall, the races less than five months apart provided the opportunity to not just <a href=\"\/news\/laura-siddall-on-her-best-season-to-date-at-42\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>enjoy an Indian summer to her professional career<\/strong><\/a>, but issue a statement that she still had plenty to say when it came to the sharp end of races.<\/p><p>Two top 10s, <a href=\"\/news\/dominating-daniela-ryf-wins-fifth-ironman-world-championship\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>seventh in St George<\/strong><\/a> followed by 10th in Kona, gave the Boulder-based Brit renewed confidence heading into 2023, and following an early season hit-out and podium finish in Chile, all looked well as she headed to Florianopolis for the planned qualification race in Ironman Brazil.<\/p><h2 id=\"h-a-spanner-in-the-works\"><strong>A spanner in the works<\/strong><\/h2><p>Then everything changed. A collision with a car during the bike leg knocked Siddall unconscious with a brain bleed and concussion, left a legacy of ongoing headaches and \u2013 far lower on her list of concerns \u2013 needing a new bike. <\/p><p>It resulted in the longest period of enforced rest Siddall has had since switching from life as a mechanical engineer to begin her professional sporting career in 2014.<\/p><p>&#8220;I haven\u2019t ever had that long doing completely nothing,&#8221; Siddall explains. &#8220;It\u2019s been a challenge building back and managing different energy levels and headache symptoms.&#8221;<\/p><p>As she began the road to recovery, Ironman offered Siddall a slot for the World Championship. <\/p><p>While it&#8217;s typically a qualification-only race, this wasn\u2019t without precedent for the event organiser, with both USA\u2019s Matt Russell and Germany\u2019s Andreas Dreitz being handed starts for previous races in Hawaii after they were also seriously injured due to accidents with vehicles during 112-mile bike legs.\u00a0<\/p><p>As with Russell and Dreitz, Siddall appears to bear no bitterness towards the company. &#8220;I\u2019m just super grateful that Ironman granted me a wildcard to race,&#8221; Siddall explains, but says expectations for Saturday\u2019s race are muted given the limited preparation time. <\/p><p>&#8220;They are lower [than last year] given the circumstances of going through the crash and rehab, but with the time available, [coach] Julie [Dibens] has got me in the best shape possible.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p><h2><strong>Room for improvement<\/strong><\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Credit: Neil Kerr\/Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>While Siddall might not be in the same physical condition \u2013 she ranks her Kona performance in 2022 as second only to <a href=\"\/news\/daniela-ryf-storms-to-challenge-roth-2017-win\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Challenge Roth in 2017<\/strong><\/a> where she finished runner-up to <a href=\"\/news\/athletes\/who-is-daniela-ryf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Daniela Ryf<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 there could still be some room to eke out some improvements. <\/p><p>&#8220;One of the first things Julie said was that we should review last year\u2019s race and the elements that could have been executed better. That\u2019s been the focus for this year.&#8221;<\/p><p>It\u2019s a message that underlines just how many factors make up a nine-hour race that can also be optimised; smart pacing in the swim, where to lay down the power on the bike, or fuelling and hydration strategies on the run, for example.<\/p><p>While another top 10 might be a longshot, Siddall is used to adapting to thrive. Having turned professional aged 33, when she was working in Australia, her triathlon career has taken her via Sydney, San Francisco, Christchurch in New Zealand and Girona in Spain to now live and train in Colorado.\u00a0<\/p><p>A four-time Ironman champion, including three victories in Ironman Australia, in 2019 she recovered from a broken collarbone to regain form and fitness to twice more finish on the podium before the year was out, including a third place in Ironman Wales.\u00a0<\/p><h2><strong>Siddall&#8217;s pick for the win<\/strong><\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2023\/10\/laura-siddall-in-kona-2022.jpg?fit=1024,800\" alt=\"Laura Siddall racing in Kona in 2022\" class=\"wp-image-150703\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Credit: Ezra Shaw\/Getty Images for Ironman<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>As part of the athlete board at the Professional Triathletes Organisation, an ambassador for race organisers Challenge Family, and involved in sustainability projects such as promoting the recycling of running shoes, she also remains a fan of the sport and if she wasn\u2019t racing on Saturday would be cheering on the sidelines.<\/p><p>&#8220;It\u2019s going to be an incredible race with some incredible females racing,&#8221; she says. <\/p><p>&#8220;If you take away the 70.3 specialists like Ash Gentle, <a href=\"\/news\/who-is-paula-findlay\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Paula Findlay<\/strong><\/a>, <strong><a href=\"\/news\/athletes\/who-is-emma-pallant-brown\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Emma Pallant-Browne<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"\/news\/athletes\/who-is-holly-lawrence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Holly Lawrence<\/a><\/strong>, there is nobody who isn\u2019t here. Hawaii just brings everybody from the sport and industry together. You just see so many people you know.&#8221;<\/p><p>As for picking a winner\u2026 &#8220;It\u2019s so hard: <a href=\"\/news\/athletes\/who-is-kat-matthews\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Kat [Matthews]<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"\/news\/athletes\/who-is-taylor-knibb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Taylor [Knibb]<\/strong><\/a>, Daniela [Ryf], <a href=\"\/news\/athletes\/who-is-chelsea-sodaro\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Chelsea [Sodaro]<\/strong><\/a>, <strong><a href=\"\/news\/who-is-anne-haug\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Anne [Haug]<\/a><\/strong>. If Daniela is on form she could be in another postcode, but she could equally take Taylor with her.\u00a0<\/p><p>&#8220;We don\u2019t know what Taylor will be like over the long distance, but she has the potential. Kat is in really good shape, you can\u2019t write off Anne, but no-one is really talking about Chelsea, and she is your defending champion.&#8221;<\/p><p>While <a href=\"\/news\/athletes\/who-is-lucy-charles-barclay\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Lucy Charles-Barclay<\/strong><\/a> and <strong><a href=\"\/news\/athletes\/who-is-laura-philipp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Laura Philipp<\/a><\/strong> complete the seven front runners, Siddall warns that the race dynamics mean we can expect outsiders to figure too. <\/p><p>&#8220;We get people who will boom or bust \u2013 go for the win or nothing \u2013 and we get people who will be steady all day and pick up the pieces as everyone else crumbles.\u00a0<\/p><p>&#8220;That leaves a whole stack of women who could be top five if the cards fall their way on race-day: <a href=\"\/news\/athletes\/who-is-skye-moench\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Skye<\/strong> <strong>Moench<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"\/news\/athletes\/who-is-fenella-langridge\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Fenella Langridge<\/strong><\/a>, Daniela Bleymehl, Lisa Norden. Sara Svensk. Sarah Crowley, who knows how to race this race and finish on the podium. Do I think they are going to be on the top step? Probably not, but they could have an impact on the the race.&#8221;<\/p><p>Experience could also play a role, with Siddall pointing out that there are only half-a-dozen athletes who&#8217;ve raced in Hawaii more than five times. Experience that could also come in handy when it comes to knowing somewhere to refuel post-race.<\/p><p>&#8220;Lava Java, Kona Brewing Co, splashing out at the Four Seasons, or Lava Lava Beach Club in Waikoloa is pretty cool at sunset.
