There\u2019s a lot of repetition, and that\u2019s certainly true of swimming.<\/p><p>The problem is that it\u2019s easy to go on autopilot, and when you do, you\u2019re going to learn as quickly or effectively.\u00a0Below are two questions that can help you stay engaged with your training.\u00a0 <\/p><p>Just ask them after each and every repetition, and you\u2019ll find your swimming improving a lot more rapidly than it has been.<\/p><h2 id=\"h-question-1-what-was-good\"><strong>Question 1: What was good?<\/strong><\/h2><p>No matter how bad a repetition was, there\u2019s always something positive that happened.\u00a0Acknowledge it.\u00a0It\u2019s critical to stay positive and this is a great way to do so.\u00a0It also allows you to build some positive momentum.\u00a0<\/p><p>If you did something well, you can do it again, and you can do it slightly better.\u00a0Slightly better over a series of repetitions adds up to something big.\u00a0<\/p><p>We all tend to be critical of ourselves and ignore the good stuff, so be sure to acknowledge it consistently.<\/p><h2><strong>Question 2: What could be better?<\/strong><\/h2><p>After every repetition, there\u2019s an opportunity to improve.\u00a0Frame it that way.\u00a0Rather, than \u2018this was terrible\u2019, it\u2019s \u2018I can do this better\u2019.\u00a0Remember, keep things positive.\u00a0You\u2019re not ignoring your mistakes, you\u2019re reframing them.\u00a0<\/p><p>And when you reframe it as an opportunity, that encourages you take action to improve it.\u00a0And getting better is all about taking effective action.\u00a0<\/p><p>It\u2019s not enough to identify mistakes or opportunities, it\u2019s about addressing them.\u00a0When you are aware of your opportunities, then you can do what\u2019s necessary to improve it, preferably on the very next repetition.<\/p><h2><strong>Decide<\/strong><\/h2><p>Once you know what was good and what could be better, it\u2019s time to put it into action.\u00a0Remember, you get better repetition by repetition, so use the information you just gathered to get better.\u00a0 <\/p><p>Decide to continue to do what you\u2019re doing well, or take advantage of the opportunity for improvement that has presented itself.\u00a0Both are great options.\u00a0 <\/p><p>Remember, this is about focus, so just pick one.\u00a0During the next repetition, you can make a different choice.\u00a0This is all about action, so decide to act!<br\/>\u00a0<br\/>If this process seems like it would take forever to go through, don\u2019t worry.\u00a0It&#8217;s something that happens automatically with a little practise.\u00a0You just know the answer because you\u2019re experiencing it as it happens.\u00a0 <\/p><p>It\u2019s a really valuable process because it promotes focus and engagement both during repetitions and after repetitions.\u00a0And if you\u2019re engaged in what you\u2019re doing, you\u2019re a lot more likely to experience success.<\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"\/training\/swim-training\/how-do-i-know-if-my-swim-skills-are-improving\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">How do I know if my swim skills are improving?<\/a><\/strong><\/li><li><strong><a href=\"\/training\/swim-training\/how-to-use-video-feedback-to-improve-your-swimming\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">How to use video feedback to improve your swimming<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><p><strong>Top image credit: <\/strong>www.rossi-photography.com<\/p> <\/body><\/html>\n<hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Andrew Sheaff Published: Tuesday, 17 October 2023 at 08:14 AM Progress in sport comes step-by-step.\u00a0 It takes a long time, and the only way to get there is one stroke at a time, one revolution at a time, and one stride at a time.
