{"id":26561,"date":"2023-10-30T16:40:53","date_gmt":"2023-10-30T15:40:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/02aa8524-2d3c-4624-9415-5c897f1c0b78"},"modified":"2023-10-30T17:46:01","modified_gmt":"2023-10-30T16:46:01","slug":"how-to-swim-well-without-needing-swim-aids","status":"publish","type":"rss_feed","link":"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/220triathlon\/rss_feed\/how-to-swim-well-without-needing-swim-aids\/","title":{"rendered":"How to swim well without needing swim aids"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\"><\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Andrew Sheaff\n      <\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Monday, 30 October 2023 at 15:40 PM<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p><strong>Fins and buoys can be useful tools for improving your swimming.\u00a0And when appropriate, you should never hesitate to use them.\u00a0The problem is when you need them to feel good and swim well.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p><p>Unfortunately, you can\u2019t use a <strong><a href=\"\/gear\/swim\/training-kit\/best-pull-buoys\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">buoy<\/a><\/strong> or <strong><a href=\"\/gear\/swim\/training-kit\/best-swim-fins-for-pool-training\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fins<\/a><\/strong> in a race!\u00a0And even if you can wear a <strong><a href=\"\/gear\/swim\/wetsuits\/best-triathlon-wetsuits\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wetsuit<\/a><\/strong>, you want to have the ability to swim well without one.\u00a0 If you can\u2019t, you\u2019re lacking in the skill department, and that\u2019s compromising your swimming.<\/p><h2>When do you need to swim with fins or a buoy?\u00a0<\/h2><p>If you\u2019re swimming more than half your workout with either of these training aids, I\u2019d say you\u2019re over reliant on the gear, and it\u2019s best to address the underlying issue.\u00a0<\/p><p>And that issue is that the hips, legs, and feet are sinking.\u00a0Fins and buoys are great because they help you counteract that sinking, which is why so many people use them.\u00a0<\/p><p>So, if you can learn how to keep your legs up at the surface, you won\u2019t need the gear anymore!\u00a0Here\u2019s how to do it.<\/p><h2 id=\"h-find-your-lungs\">Find your lungs<\/h2><p>Learning to keep your feet up on the surface is all about the lungs.\u00a0If you can understand how the lungs are helping you float, and then you can leverage that flotation to keep your legs up, you\u2019re golden.\u00a0<\/p><p>The first step is to learn to feel the support of you lungs.\u00a0My favourite way to help swimmers learn to do that is with the <strong>Ball Float<\/strong>.\u00a0Just grab a big breath, grab your knees, hang out.\u00a0<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe title=\"Ball Float\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6tfe8S9eZBc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><p>The vast majority of people will float right at the surface.\u00a0And if you\u2019re more of a sinker, you\u2019ll find that you settle a little lower in the water.\u00a0The key is to feel how the water supports you.<\/p><h2>Leverage your lungs<\/h2><p>Once you can feel that support, you need to learn to leverage it.\u00a0 You can begin to do so by practising the <strong>Active Jellyfish<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe title=\"Active Jellyfish\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/LV1stz-eRWc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><p>You\u2019ll learn to press the chest into the water to get the hips up higher at the surface.
