Well, technically, it&#8217;s round two as the first race in Abu Dhabi <a href=\"https:\/\/www.220triathlon.com\/news\/organisers-cancel-wtcs-abu-dhabi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>had to be cancelled<\/strong><\/a>. <\/p><p>Next up, though, is Cagliari, which is set to take place this weekend, and there&#8217;s some strong talent on show as athletes battle for Olympic qualification.<\/p><p>Keep on reading to find out what happened in the series in 2023, who&#8217;s racing in Cagliari and what the rest of the short-course season looks like&#8230;<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-happened-in-the-2023-wtcs\">What happened in the 2023 WTCS?<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"World Triathlon: 2023 moments\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/EXfoJNWUSJA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><p>The first round in Abu Dhabi on 3 March saw double GB gold, as <a href=\"\/news\/athletes\/who-is-beth-potter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Beth Potter<\/strong><\/a> notched up <a href=\"\/news\/beth-potter-takes-her-first-wtcs-win-in-abu-dhabi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>her first-ever WTCS win<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"\/news\/athletes\/who-is-alex-yee\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Alex Yee<\/strong><\/a> put in <a href=\"\/news\/alex-yee-executes-perfect-race-to-win-wtcs-abu-dhabi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>a masterclass performance to take his fifth WTCS victory<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p><p>The <a href=\"\/news\/sophie-coldwell-wins-her-first-world-triathlon-race-in-yokohama\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>second-round spoils<\/strong><\/a> in Yokohama went to Potter&#8217;s teammate <a href=\"\/news\/athletes\/who-is-sophie-coldwell\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Sophie Coldwell<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 her first WTCS victory \u2013 and NZ&#8217;s <a href=\"\/news\/athletes\/who-is-hayden-wilde\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Hayden Wilde<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p><p>The third round in Cagliari, Sardinia, was yet another Brit double as <a href=\"\/news\/athletes\/who-is-georgia-taylor-brown\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Georgia Taylor Brown<\/strong><\/a> rediscovered that world-beating form to take <strong><a href=\"\/news\/georgia-taylor-brown-puts-in-masterclass-to-win-wtcs-cagliari\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">her first win of the season<\/a><\/strong> and <a href=\"\/news\/alex-yee-beats-hayden-wilde-in-cagliari-wtcs-head-to-head\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Yee once again got the better of the field<\/strong><\/a> to make it two wins from two race starts.<\/p><p>Montreal hosted the fourth round where <a href=\"\/news\/brit-beth-potter-takes-her-second-world-series-win-in-montreal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Potter reigned supreme<\/strong><\/a> yet again. In a slightly depleted men&#8217;s field, Aussie <a href=\"\/news\/matt-hauser-wins-montreal-for-his-first-ever-world-triathlon-victory\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Matt Hauser took his first-ever WTCS win<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p><p>Round five took place in a familiar venue but with an entirely new format for the German city of Hamburg \u2013 the eliminator, which has so far only been contested in Montreal. The race also acted as the first-ever World Super Sprint Champs.<\/p><p>Taking the top honours were <a href=\"\/news\/hayden-wilde-and-cassandre-beaugrand-win-hamburg-wtcs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Hayden Wilde and Cassandre Beaugrand<\/strong><\/a>, for their second and first wins of the season, respectively.<\/p><p>The penultimate race took place in Sunderland, UK, for what could be <a href=\"\/blog\/british-world-series-exit-underlines-bigger-issue-for-triathlon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>the last WTCS outing for some time on UK shores.<\/strong><\/a><\/p><p>But back on the race course it was a French sweep as <a href=\"\/news\/pierre-le-corre-wins-his-first-wtcs-race-in-sunderland\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Pierre Le Corre beat teammate Leo Bergere<\/strong><\/a> in a sprint to take his first WTCS win; <a href=\"\/news\/cassandre-beaugrand-makes-it-a-french-double-as-she-wins-sunderland-wtcs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Cassandre Beaugrand made it two in a row<\/strong><\/a>; and Team France outshone the field to <a href=\"\/news\/team-france-round-out-sunderland-wtcs-weekend-with-a-third-gold\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>win the Mixed Team Relay<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p><p>Pontevedra, Spain, hosted the Grand Final, with Alex Yee leading the rankings and poised to become the first British world champion since\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.220triathlon.com\/news\/athletes\/who-is-jonny-brownlee\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Jonny Brownlee<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0back in 2012. However, a terrible swim for the Brit saw him eventually finish in 29th place and fifth in the overall standings. <\/p><p><strong><a href=\"\/news\/dorian-coninx-wins-2023-world-triathlon-title-as-alex-yee-and-hayden-wilde-have-days-to-forget\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Taking the spoils was Dorian Coninx<\/a><\/strong>, a surprise victory for the Frenchmen who had been in fifth place heading into the Final. <\/p><p>For the women, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.220triathlon.com\/news\/gbs-beth-potter-crowned-2023-world-triathlon-champion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Beth Potter started as No.1 and finished No.1<\/a><\/strong>, leading from almost start to finish to take her first world title. <\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-happened-in-the-last-race\">What happened in the last race?<\/h2><p>The second round of the 2024 WTCS took place in Yokohama, Japan, on Saturday 11 May, and saw two new names added to the list of WTCS winners \u2013 <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.220triathlon.com\/news\/usas-pearson-wins-first-wtcs-race-in-yokohama\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Morgan Pearson in the men&#8217;s race<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.220triathlon.com\/news\/yokohama-wtcs-french-women-set-stall-out-for-paris-success\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">L\u00e9onie P\u00e9riault in the women&#8217;s<\/a>. <\/strong><\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-when-and-where-is-wtcs-cagliari-taking-place\">When and where is WTCS Cagliari taking place?<\/h2><p>The third round of the 2024 WTCS takes place in Cagliari, Sardinia, on Saturday 25 May. <\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-which-events-are-taking-place-in-cagliari\">Which events are taking place in Cagliari?<\/h2><p>Cagliari will be hosting the elite men&#8217;s and women&#8217;s Olympic-distance WTCS.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-which-athletes-are-racing-in-cagliari\">Which athletes are racing in Cagliari? <\/h2><p>Cagliari is the last race within the Olympic qualification window, so it&#8217;s a big one for any athlete still waiting to punch their Paris ticket. <\/p><p>And that includes <strong><a href=\"\/news\/athletes\/who-is-georgia-taylor-brown\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Georgia Taylor-Brown<\/a><\/strong>. The defending Olympic silver medallist will be thrilled that Cagaliari is the race which could see her sign up for Olympics No.2, having won the last two \u2013 and only two \u2013 races here. <\/p><p>Battling Taylor-Brown for those final two GB women&#8217;s slots \u2013 Beth Potter will be lining up in Paris, and Cagliari \u2013 will be <strong><a href=\"\/news\/athletes\/who-is-kate-waugh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kate Waugh<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"\/news\/athletes\/who-is-sophie-coldwell\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sophie Coldwell<\/a><\/strong>. <\/p><p>On the men&#8217;s side, Paris qualifier Alex Yee is also on <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/wtcs.triathlon.org\/start_lists\/2024_world_triathlon_championship_series_cagliari\/627959\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the startlist<\/a><\/strong>, but a notable absentee is <strong><a href=\"\/news\/athletes\/who-is-jonny-brownlee\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jonny Brownlee<\/a><\/strong> who had been hoping to line up for his fourth Games. That could still happen, but who else has a chance to don the hallowed GB tri-suit? <\/p><p>With only one more slot available in the men&#8217;s squad (GB haven&#8217;t achieved enough points to send three), Barclay Izzard could be the one to capitalise. With four top-25 WTCS finishes in 2023 and plenty of success in the relay format \u2013 including a silver medal at the Paris Test Event \u2013 this could be Izzard&#8217;s chance to shine. <\/p><p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.220triathlon.com\/news\/athletes\/who-is-sam-dickinson\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Samuel Dicki<\/a><a href=\"\/news\/athletes\/who-is-sam-dickinson\">nson<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0is another GB contender and is the second-ranked British man behind Yee in the world rankings. <\/p><p>Then there&#8217;s the wildcard \u2013\u00a0World Cup winner Hugo Milner and one of only a handful of men on the circuit capable of matching pace with Yee on the run. <\/p><p>And that&#8217;s just the race within a race for the British team! The US women&#8217;s team, for example, has five women in contention for the final two places alongside <strong><a href=\"\/news\/athletes\/who-is-taylor-knibb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Taylor Knibb<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p><p>Plus, defending champion <strong><a href=\"\/news\/athletes\/who-is-flora-duffy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Flora Duffy<\/a><\/strong> is back on the scene, having returned to racing in Yokohama after an agonisingly long 18 months on the sidelines with a seventh place.
