{"id":28186,"date":"2024-03-04T18:06:16","date_gmt":"2024-03-04T16:06:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/3528c51d-407d-42a2-96f4-74473687ca41"},"modified":"2024-05-29T00:54:46","modified_gmt":"2024-05-28T22:54:46","slug":"the-drill-combination-that-will-improve-your-catch","status":"publish","type":"rss_feed","link":"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/220triathlon\/rss_feed\/the-drill-combination-that-will-improve-your-catch\/","title":{"rendered":"The drill combination that will improve your catch"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\"><\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By <\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Monday, 04 March 2024 at 16:06 PM<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p><strong>Improving the catch in freestyle can be difficult to do.\u00a0And unfortunately, it\u2019s an important skill to master because without an effective catch, it\u2019s very difficult to create an effective pull.\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p><p>Because it\u2019s important, and because it\u2019s difficult, we want to use the most effective strategies to create positive change, and sometimes, that means using multiple strategies in combination.\u00a0<\/p><p>I\u2019m going to show you 3 drills you can use in combination to improve your catch.\u00a0<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-set-up-the-stroke\">Set up the stroke<\/h2><p>One of the main obstacles for an effective catch is that many triathletes don\u2019t understand what\u2019s supposed to happen.\u00a0The name is a little misleading, and it can create the wrong impression.\u00a0 <\/p><p>To help triathletes improve their understanding of the catch, I like to have them practise setting up the stroke, simply and easily.\u00a0It\u2019s a simple bending of the elbow and adjustment of the hand.\u00a0<\/p><p>Check out this video to see it in action.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Setting Up the Stroke\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Zxe7qj-FMn0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Wall pull<\/h2><p>A second challenge in developing an effective catch is learning how to use the forearm.\u00a0While setting up the stroke correctly can help here, learning to apply pressure with the forearm in the right position is critical as well.\u00a0<\/p><p>That\u2019s why I love Wall Pull.\u00a0It\u2019s simple, it\u2019s easy, and it allows you to feel what it\u2019s like to <strong><a href=\"\/training\/swim-training\/how-to-establish-an-early-vertical-forearm-and-improve-your-swim-pull\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">create an effective forearm position<\/a><\/strong>, as well as apply force in that position.\u00a0It lets you feel what you need to do.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Wall Pull\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/AA-nRakvumw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Upside down paddles<\/h2><p>As you\u2019ve probably noticed, using the forearm correctly is a huge part of improving the catch.\u00a0Having felt what it\u2019s like to use the forearm effectively, we\u2019re going to start learning to use the forearm while actually swimming.\u00a0 <\/p><p>By holding a paddle upside down, the wrist is locked in place.
