If you\u2019re experiencing any of these symptoms then you\u2019re in the realms of dehydration\u2026<\/p>\n<p><strong>Head: <\/strong>Dry mouth, loss of appetite, thirst, head rushes and dizziness, and mental fatigue.<\/p>\n<div><strong>Heart: <\/strong>Elevated heart rate, resulting in a reduction of oxygen being carried to the muscles.<\/div>\n<div\/>\n<div><strong>Core: <\/strong>Your body temperature rises faster during exercise when the body is dehydrated as it can no longer regulate itself, meaning critical temperature can be reached far more quickly.<\/div>\n<div\/>\n<div><strong>Skin: <\/strong>Increased sweating and skin flushing (otherwise known as \u2018hot flushes\u2019). Those who sweat a lot during exercise are at increased risk of dehydration. Weigh yourself before and after exercise to determine sweat loss.<\/div>\n<div\/>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Legs: <\/strong>Fatigue due to increased rate of muscle glycogen use. Thirst, environmental temperature and sweat rates will indicate if more or less is required.<\/p>\n<p class=\"&quot;p2&quot;\">A carbohydrate and electrolyte blend is often great for this time, as it can contribute towards fluid intake and fuelling. Your sweat contains a variety of electrolytes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Minerals<\/strong><br\/>\nRequired to regulate your body\u2019s functions. Can be lost in sweat.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sodium<\/strong><br\/>\nAn essential mineral for the human body. It plays a vital role in nerve and muscle function, the absorption of major nutrients, and maintaining water levels.<\/p>\n<p> <\/p><\/div> <\/section><\/div>\n<h2><strong>Water vs sports drinks<\/strong><\/h2>\n<div>So what should you rehydrate with? Water will understandably be top of many athletes\u2019 list and it initially seems difficult to argue against such a philosophy. But, with a little understanding of science, you can.<\/div>\n<div\/>\n<div>Water is a good thirst quencher, but it isn\u2019t the best rehydrator during activity due to the lack of sodium and flavour. Water may restore the volume of the blood plasma, but it also inhibits the thirst mechanism before your sodium levels can be replenished.<\/div>\n<div\/>\n<div>For an athlete, water doesn\u2019t provide your body with what it needs \u2013 fuel and electrolytes \u2013 for best performance. Carbohydrates are essential to fuelling working muscles, fighting fatigue and helping performance.<\/div>\n<div>\n<ul><li><strong><a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.220triathlon.com\/training\/nutrition-training\/dehydration-and-sodium-why-replacing-salt-is-crucial\/&quot;\">Why rehydrating with salt is crucial<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul><\/div>\n<div>Electrolytes, like sodium and other minerals lost through sweat, should be replenished to maintain body fluid balance. It\u2019s true that water drunk in normal quantities isn\u2019t going to bother you, but neither is it necessarily going to help.<\/div>\n<div\/>\n<div>A scientific study showed that cyclists drinking the sports drink Gatorade during fast-paced cycling had nearly twice the performance benefit during a subsequent trial than when consuming water or carbohydrate alone.<\/div>\n<div\/>\n<div>Salt is the next obvious area of debate; bypass that problem by drinking an electrolyte sports drink. You may have seen stories about athletes dying because they drank too much water in a race. This has occurred, but like so many things, it\u2019s the press that have created this alarm.<\/div>\n<div\/>\n<div>It can happen, and forcing down several litres in a short space of time when dehydrated can create problems\u2026 as, of course, will not drinking anything! So remember: controlled drinking will pay dividends.
