Gather with friends and family to share autumn’s bountiful harvest

After the active, often-hectic seasons of spring and summer, autumn is a time of slowing down, of pausing to reflect as the evenings draw in. It’s an opportunity to give ourselves a bit of TLC, too. We are living through challenging times of change, and the simple comforts of the countryside have never been more needed.

With autumn being a period of fruitfulness – of wild foraged nuts and berries, of delicious harvests from the veg bed, of exciting locally grown provender in the shops – it’s often food that we turn to when we need comfort. Good home-cooked meals make us feel satisfied, calm, cared-for and care-free, especially when shared with friends and family.

So this wise little guide is a celebration of comfort food, with an extra emphasis on simplicity, using ingredients that are sustainable and farmed in a way that enhances the land and its wildlife. There is comfort in that knowledge.

I’m also delighted to welcome a long-term hero of mine, Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall. His delicious recipes add extra flavour and wholesomeness to classic dishes that nourish body and spirit. Enjoy!
