DAY OUT: Tealby, Lincolnshire

Escape to the wolds

Enveloped by the beautiful rolling countryside of the Lincolnshire Wolds, this small village is the perfect base for an autumn break, says Jane Keightley

All Saints in Tealby has become known as the Ramblers’ Church

Tealby is your typical chocolate-box village of cottages with roses round the door and vintage tearooms. Indeed, its pub, the Kings Head, is the oldest thatched pub in Lincolnshire, dating to 1367.

Nearby footpaths, including the well-known Viking Way, weave their way across gentle slopes. Not only do you get a view of Lincoln Cathedral from the highest point on a clear day, but you also pass a deer park and fields full of beautiful Lincolnshire longwool sheep.

Perched on a hilltop above nearby Walesby, there is even a Ramblers’ Church. Officially known as All Saints, it fell out of use after another church was constructed in the village below. Inside is a stained-glass window dedicated to lovers of the countryside, which depicts cyclists and ramblers enjoying the great outdoors.

Back in the villlage, enjoy refreshments at the Vintage Tea Rooms, which serves homemade food and cakes.
