PHOTO OF THE MONTH
MORNING DEW

“The robber fly is a superior predator that spends all day catching insects, but it is docile without sunlight, so early mornings are the best time to photograph it. Occasionally you find one asleep covered in dew, perfect for creating amazing photos.”
THE PRIZE

This month’s winner receives a pair of Ariat Skyline Mid Waterproof boots, worth £130. The boots are mesh-lined and made with waterproof full-grain leather, plus a shock-absorbing EVA midsole and extra wear protection around the toe and heel. A dual-density Duratread™ outsole provides multi-dimensional traction for sure footing. Sizes: women’s 3–8.5; men’s 7–12. ariat.com
LINGER A WHILE

“As I was walking through the trees, I noticed a group of long-tailed tits. While the others darted off, this little bird was not camera-shy and stuck around for a photo.”
BLUE BEAUTY

“Eyeworth Pond, just a few hundred metres from Fritham, is fantastic for birds that favour a woodland-edge habitat. As well as blue tits, there are marsh tits, coal tits, treecreepers and nuthatches that often turn up.”
SUN BIRD

“This was taken on my phone during a solo walk. I didn’t realise the timing had worked out until I looked at the pictures at the end of the day; this one stood out.”
HANGING ABOUT

“The image was captured in my back garden. It was a sunny autumn afternoon when I saw this little chap swaying in the wind. He was more than happy for me to get up close and capture his best side.”
ON THE HUNT

“This beautiful female kestrel was hovering closely above us one morning. I quickly grabbed my camera and got a few images of her as she hung suspended in the air. She precisely pinpointed her prey, then swooped down on a vole in the long rough grass.”
