Downing Street, the heart of British political life, has also been home to a number of beloved pets over the years. These animals have provided companionship, comfort, and sometimes a touch of comic relief to Prime Ministers and their staff.

Here’s a look at some of the most notable Downing Street pets that lived behind the famous black door.

Rufus (dog)

Owner: Winston Churchill
Dates: 1940 – 1945 (and again 1951 – 1955)

Winston Churchill, the indomitable wartime Prime Minister, had a miniature poodle named Rufus. Rufus was a steadfast companion during some of Britain’s darkest days. Churchill’s fondness for Rufus was well-known, often bringing him to war meetings and ensuring he was always by his side.

Nelson (cat)

Owner: Winston Churchill
Dates: 1940 – 1945 (and again 1951 – 1955)
Named after the famous Admiral Nelson, this cat was a constant presence in Churchill’s Downing Street home. Nelson the cat was another source of comfort for the Prime Minister, often seen lounging in the study while Churchill worked on his wartime speeches.

Peta (cat)

Owner: Harold Wilson
Dates: 1964 – 1976
Peta, a black cat, served as Chief Mouser during Harold Wilson, Alec Douglas-Home and Edward Heath terms in office. Known for her keen hunting skills, Peta played an important role in keeping the Downing Street rodent population under control.

Nemo (cat)

Owner: Harold Wilson
Dates: October 1964 – March 1970 (and again 1974 – 1976)
Nemo, a Siamese cat, was a constant presence during Harold Wilson’s terms in office.

Humphrey (cat)

Owner: Margaret Thatcher
Dates: 1989 – 1997


Humphrey served as Chief Mouser to the Cabinet Office. Initially adopted during Margaret Thatcher’s tenure, Humphrey continued his duties under John Major. He became a media darling, often photographed patrolling the premises or lounging around the Prime Minister’s residence.

Sybil (cat)

Owner: Gordon Brown
Dates: September 2007 – January 2009


Sybil, a black and white cat, was named after the character from “Fawlty Towers.” She was brought to Downing Street by Chancellor Alistair Darling when Gordon Brown was Prime Minister. Although she didn’t settle well and eventually moved back to Scotland, she was a notable resident during her brief stay.

Larry (cat)

Owner: David Cameron
Dates: February 2011 – Present


Probably the one Downing Street pet everyone can name, Larry, a brown and white tabby, was appointed Chief Mouser during David Cameron’s tenure. Known for his street-smart demeanor and occasional scraps with other political pets, Larry has remained a constant through multiple Prime Ministers, becoming a beloved fixture at Downing Street.

Freya (cat)

Owner: George Osborne
Dates: September 2012 – November 2014


Freya, a tabby cat, shared duties with Larry for a period. Known for her adventurous spirit, Freya often wandered far from Downing Street, causing some consternation among staff. Her explorative nature eventually led her to a quieter life in the Kent countryside.

Palmerston (cat)

Owner: Foreign Office
Dates: April 2016 – August 2020


Palmerston, a black and white cat named after the 19th-century Foreign Secretary, was the Chief Mouser at the Foreign & Commonwealth Office. His occasional encounters with Larry made headlines, and he was known for his adept hunting skills, catching many mice during his tenure.

Dylin (dog)

Dates: July 2019 – September 2022
