Carrying a first aid kit on your outdoor adventures is vital, as accidents can happen. Here, charity St John Ambulance explain what should be in a first aid kit.
Getting outdoors and being in nature is wonderful for both our physical and mental health, but with the joy of hiking and camping comes the risk of minor injuries and accidents, so it’s wise to have a first aid kit on hand.
What should be in a first aid kit?
The key pieces of equipment to pack in your outdoor first aid kit include:
- Blister plasters
- Bandage
- Wash proof plasters
- Gloves
- Microporous tape
- Scissors
- Sterile dressings
- Saline solution
- Alcohol free moist wipes
- Foil blanket
Other items you may consider adding to a first aid kit include an emergency whistle, and over-the-counter painkillers, such as paracetamol and antihistamines, particularly if you know you or someone you are going outdoors with may be allergic to something.
If you’re planning on swimming outdoors or being outside in colder weather, you should also consider packing warm clothes as well as bringing a hot drink to help keep you warm – particularly post-swim.
It may also be useful to make a note of your location using What Three Words, so if you or someone you’re with experiences a life-threatening emergency, rescue teams can be directed to your location quickly.
