Learn all about the stunning mansion where Ghosts is filmed
One of the main characters in the BBC hit comedy Ghosts is, in fact, not a ghost at all. It’s not even a living person. It’s a house – Button House, to be more precise.
This Christmas, viewers will make their final visit to the iconic building for the culmination of the fifth and final series, discovering what will happen to the characters – be they bricks, ghosts or humans.
The house has been at the centre of the action since 2019 when the show began, depicted as the ruin inherited by one of the lead (human) characters, Alison Cooper. Intriguingly, the neglected history of the building isn’t too dissimilar to that of the real Button House.
Where is Ghosts filmed?
The real-life Button House – where Ghosts is filmed – is West Horsley Place in Surrey, a Grade I listed medieval manor house that dates back to 1425.
However, like the fictional Button House, its future is far from secure. It is registered on the Heritage At Risk Register and, according to the website, some of the series’ plot lines were even inspired by the real-life story of West Horsley Place.
West Horsley Place was privately owned and occupied by Mary, Duchess of Roxburghe until her death in 2014. Her great-nephew Bamber Gascoigne (1935-2022) then inherited the house, which by this point was in need of much repair.
In 2015, Bamber Gascoigne and his wife set up a charitable trust to try and safeguard its future.
Today the building is open to visitors and various events are held there.
