Our review: a minimalist walking sandal that mimics the feeling of barefoot walking. Worth trying if you’ve struggled with other types of sandals.

Launched by USA husband-and-wife team Steven and Lena in 2009 in response to Steven’s running injuries, Xero Shoes produce minimalist running shoes and walking boots as well as sandals. Their designs have non-elevated heels and zero arch support for a near-to-barefoot experience. The Z-Trail EV has been designed for trail walking and running.

First impressions

You can’t fail to be impressed by how light and packable these sandals are, not to mention beach-ready good looking, but you might not think them sturdy enough for serious walking. We were slightly sceptical but pleasantly surprised by how often they turned out to be our sandal of choice.

Fit

The fit is controlled by Velcro fastenings on the two minimal nylon straps, one of which fastens around the ankle, the other around the back. The generous footbed has been designed to let your feet take up their natural shape.

Are they grippy?

The combination of rubber sole and all-over flexibility gives these sandals a reassuring amount of grip. The tread pattern has around 5mm of depth.

How do they feel?

These sandals offer a walking experience as close to barefoot as you’re likely to get. They’re so light in weight and touch; it would be easy to forget you were wearing them. The nylon straps are softer than they look and allow for a good amount of movement. If you’re more used to a tighter hold from your shoes, this might at first seem disconcerting. When walking on rougher surfaces these sandals allow you to feel what’s underneath your foot but don’t cause discomfort.

Durability?

Compared to other lightweight sandals these seem durable. The outer front strap fastening is moulded into the sole and Xero Shoes have given them a 5,000-mile or 24-month guarantee.

Sustainability and ethics?

These sandals are made in China. The straps are recycled nylon webbing.

Good value?

Not if you prefer more supportive footwear.

Best used for:

Great to pack for travelling but you’ll probably want to wear them on the journey as well as on less rugged trails.
