01 WESTMINSTER ABBEY, LONDON<\/span><\/span><\/h4>\n\n

Since 1066, every English monarch (except Edward V and Edward VII) has been crowned here.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

For a royal ramble, retrace Queen Elizabeth II\u2019s five-mile coronation procession route: Westminster Abbey, Whitehall, Trafalgar Square, Pall Mall, St James\u2019s Street, Piccadilly, Hyde Park, Oxford Street, Regent Street, Haymarket and The Mall to Buckingham Palace. <\/p>\n\n

02 OLD MINSTER, WINCHESTER<\/span><\/span><\/h4>\n\n

Edward the Confessor was crowned here on 8 June 1042. The Old Minster was demolished in 1093 and it was replaced by Winchester Cathedral, although a brickwork outline of the Old Minster site still exists in the cathedral grounds today. Follow Keats\u2019 Walk for a four-mile stroll along the Itchen to St Catherine\u2019s Hill. <\/p>\n\n

03 BATH ABBEY, SOMERSET<\/span><\/span><\/h4>\n\n

A floor stone in Bath Abbey commemorates Edgar the Peaceful\u2019s coronation here on 11 May 973. Our current coronation ceremony is still based on this event. Take the National Trust\u2019s three-mile \u2018Walk to the View\u2019 route, starting at the Abbey and through Bathwick Meadow, to see the town\u2019s famous Georgian skyline.<\/p>\n\n

04 SCONE ABBEY, PERTH<\/span><\/span><\/h4>\n\n

Between 1124 and 1651, the Scots crowned 13 of their kings and queens on the Stone of Scone at Scone Abbey; a replica of the stone now stands beside the abbey, while the real stone can be seen in Edinburgh Castle. Follow the Friar\u2019s Den Walk to explore the site, and look out for resident red squirrels and rare hawfinches. <\/p>\n\n

05 CANTERBURY CATHEDRAL, KENT<\/span><\/span><\/h4>\n\n

In an earlier building, King Harthnacnut \u2013 first cousin to Queen Elizabeth II, 28 times removed\u2013 was crowned at this site on 18 June 1040. Admire the glorious colours of the stained-glass window depicting the Queen\u2019s 1953 coronation and King George VI\u2019s 1937 coronation. Use the six-mile circular George and Dragon Stour Valley and Canterbury Trail to explore historic trails and water meadows beside the River Stour. <\/p>\n\n

06 OWAIN GLYND\u0174R CENTRE, MACHYNLLETH<\/span><\/span><\/h4>\n\n

After leading a revolt against Henry IV, Owain Glynd\u0175r was crowned Prince of Wales in 1404 \u2013 the last native Welshman to hold the title. The ceremony took place on the site where the Owain Glynd\u0175r Centre \u2013 first built in 1460 \u2013 now sits. Take a regal circular stroll from the town\u2019s clock tower to Dyfi Bridge, returning along the Afon Dyfi and Afon Dulas. <\/p>\n\n

07 GLOUCESTER CATHEDRAL, GLOUCESTERSHIRE<\/span><\/span><\/h4>\n\n

Henry III was hastily crowned, aged nine, in St Peter\u2019s Abbey \u2013 now Gloucester Cathedral \u2013 on 28 October 1216, before his ceremonial coronation at Westminster Abbey in 1220. A stained-glass window in the south aisle commemorates the event. Explore the vault above the quire \u2013 amasterpiece of design. Take Westgate Street to Alney Island Nature Reserve beside the River Severn, home to orchids, dragonflies and waders. <\/p>\n\n
