Perched on the edge of the UK\u2019s largest sea inlet is Mount Stewart, a gorgeous neo-classical house surrounded by woodland, orchards and farmland just waiting to be explored, says Helen <\/strong>Fairbairn <\/strong><\/p>\n\n

The shores of Strangford Lough, County Down, harbour a host of precious habitats. Prime among them is the family-friendly National Trust estate of Mount Stewart, on the lough\u2019s north-eastern edge. <\/p>\n\n

Reduced winter foliage makes it easy to spot the demesne\u2019s red squirrels and woodland birds, while seasonal flocks of gadwall supplement resident water birds on the lake. <\/p>\n\n

To explore this rich landscape, start in front of the 19th-century mansion and follow the Lake Walk, a wide gravel path that meanders left, past the lake. Spot evergreen trees, such as monkey puzzle and Californian redwood, and later the famous white stag statue. <\/p>\n\n

Cross a small stone bridge to meet Lady\u2019s Walk; turn right for a 0.6-mile circuit. Alternatively, continue on woodland paths for a two-mile loop around Rhododendron Hill, before you return to the main house. <\/p>\n\n
