Great ridge ramble<\/h2>\n\n

I was inspired to climb Mam Tor after seeing so many amazing photos of it during my time on the magazine \u2013 and this iconic peak didn\u2019t disappoint. <\/p>\n\n

A lovely circular route begins at the Cheshire Cheese Inn, a great post-walk pub for a drink in front of the fire. But before any thoughts of a cold pint, it\u2019s time to work up a thirst. <\/p>\n\n

TOR TO TOR <\/strong><\/h5>\n\n

The route quickly climbs north to the top of Back Tor, offering the first of many stunning views across rural Derbyshire. As you veer west along the undulating Great Ridge to Hollins Cross, you are rewarded with breathtaking views of Edale Valley, Kinder Scout and the Derwent Moors. A gradual ascent brings you to Mam Tor, a popular spot for paragliders and kestrels, and the perfect halfway point for a rest to admire the stunning scenery. <\/p>\n\n

VALLEY, RUINS AND INN <\/strong><\/h5>\n\n

Returning to Castleton, the route heads east, levelling out before reaching a striking narrow valley leading towards the dramatic ruins of 11thcentury Peveril Castle, now run by English Heritage. As you descend the valley, with water streaming at your feet, the view of the ruins perched high on the rugged rocks above is an impressive sight. <\/p>\n\n

The path soon arrives back at Castleton and its cluster of traditional stone buildings. You\u2019re spoilt for choice with fine caf\u00e9s and pubs, but we chose to return to our starting point for that well-earned pint at the Cheshire Cheese Inn. <\/p>\n\n
