From here, you can climb the meadow of Wardlow Hay Cop before continuing on to Monsal Head for iconic views over the Wye. Complete this flower-filled five-mile ramble via the Monsal Trail. <\/p>\n\n<div class=\"no-tts wp-block-image article-in-image infographic\"><figure class=\"no-tts aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"870\" height=\"792\" src=\"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/45\/2023\/04\/2-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"no-tts wp-image-25281\" srcset=\"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/45\/2023\/04\/2-3.jpg 870w, https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/45\/2023\/04\/2-3-300x273.jpg 300w, https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/45\/2023\/04\/2-3-768x699.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 870px) 100vw, 870px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n<h5 class=\"sans-serif article-subhead\">1. <strong>START <\/strong><\/h5>\n\n<p class=\"article-full-body sans-serif\">At Upperdale, follow the country lane to Cressbrook. The present mill was built by Sir Richard Arkwright\u2019s son and extended by William Newton. The sprawling building is an impressive sight in this isolated valley. <\/p>\n\n<h5 class=\"sans-serif article-subhead\">2. <strong>0.5 MILES<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n<p class=\"article-full-body sans-serif\"><span style=\"\">Follow the road uphill, keeping right. Near the top, drop down the narrow lane leading to Ravensdale Cottages (signed). The terraced cottages, tucked beneath soaring limestone cliffs, could be from a Hardy novel. <\/span><\/p>\n\n<h5 class=\"sans-serif article-subhead\">3. <strong>1 MILE <\/strong><\/h5>\n\n<p class=\"article-full-body sans-serif\">Continue straight on to follow a path alongside the brook. Cross the footbridge to climb through ash and wych elm woodlands with scrubby thorn bushes, creamy white in spring. Soon, views open to magnificent Cressbrook Dale, winding its way to Peter\u2019s Stone. <\/p>\n\n<h5 class=\"sans-serif article-subhead\">4. <strong>1.7 MILES <\/strong><\/h5>\n\n<p class=\"article-full-body sans-serif\"> <span style=\"\">Reaching the top of the dale, turn right to <\/span><span style=\"\">follow the edge. The grasslands contain patches of bloody cranesbill, rare bird\u2019s-foot sedge and a canvas of other wildflowers.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"article-full-body sans-serif\">Through the gate, ascend Wardlow Hay Cop, one of Derbyshire\u2019s finest meadows. The pointed pimple, 370 metres high, is managed by Natural England. It\u2019s rich in flora, including meadow oats and mountain pansies. <\/p>\n\n<h5 class=\"sans-serif article-subhead\">5. <strong>2.2 MILES <\/strong><\/h5>\n\n<p class=\"article-full-body sans-serif\">Drop down to the path south-west of the summit. Head south, then curve east, cutting across two upland fields before emerging on to the lane, dropping through Hay Dale to Bottomshill Road. <\/p>\n\n<h5 class=\"sans-serif article-subhead\">6. <strong>3.7 MILES <\/strong><\/h5>\n\n<p class=\"article-full-body sans-serif\">Turn left then take the footpath climbing to Monsal Head, with refreshment options and superb views of the looping Wye River and the majestic viaduct. <\/p>\n\n<h5 class=\"sans-serif article-subhead\">7. <strong>4.3 MILES <\/strong><\/h5>\n\n<p class=\"article-full-body sans-serif\">Descend to the viaduct (signed), continuing north-west along the Monsal Trail with its railway heritage. Look out for an old brick hut on the left. Slip round the metal gate behind it, then head down the track and under the railway bridge. Cross the bridge spanning the River Wye, continuing to Bottomshill Road. Turn left for the car park \u2013 a short distance away. <\/p>\n\n<section class=\"wp-block-uagb-section uagb-section__wrap uagb-section__background-color uagb-block-305eaf8d-c3fc-4051-8dbd-43ae9fc44774 article-boxout\"><div class=\"uagb-section__overlay\"><\/div><div class=\"uagb-section__inner-wrap\">\n<h4 class=\"sans-serif article-subhead\"><strong>USEFUL INFO <\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"article-full-body sans-serif\"><strong>Starting point <\/strong><br>The free public parking at Upperdale layby next to Chatsworth Cottages, SK17 8SZ.
