On 23 October 1802, Dorothy Wordsworth wrote in her journal: \u201cA breathless, grey day that leaves the golden woods\u00a0of autumn quiet in their tranquillity, stately and beautiful in their decaying. The lake is a perfect mirror.\u201d<\/p>\n

This six-mile circular tour around Grasmere and Rydal Water illustrates perfectly how her description of the autumnal landscape is just as evocative today as it was when she wrote it in her journal 215 years ago. The route starts and finishes at Rydal, home to the Badge Bar<\/a> \u2013 the perfect reward after a day on the trail.<\/p>\n

Rydal Water and Grasmere walk<\/h2>\n

1. The Coffin Trail<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Coffin Trail runs below Nab Scar, not far from Rydal Mount house (once home to Dorothy and her brother William \u2013 and still in the Wordsworth family). This historic route to Grasmere\u2019s St Oswald\u2019s Church is the perfect altitude from which to absorb Rydal Water\u2019s reflective autumnal views.\u00a0Look long enough and not\u00a0only are the season\u2019s traditional red, orange, yellow and brown tones visible, but there\u2019s also\u00a0a wider palette of purples, silvers, greens and whites.<\/p>\n

2. Luscious lemons<\/strong><\/p>\n

Further along, White Moss Common is ideal for glancing back at Nab Scar\u2019s lower slopes, lined with larches\u00a0of luscious lemon hues.<\/p>\n

The Coffin Trail drops\u00a0past another fascinating Wordsworthian property,\u00a0Dove Cottage<\/a>, before heading into the main village. With fewer tourists visiting in the autumn season, it\u2019s the perfect time to explore the Wordsworth family graves in the churchyard.<\/p>\n

The return circuit around\u00a0the water of Grasmere begins at Red Bank, just opposite\u00a0St Oswalds. For picturesque panoramas across the lake towards Loughrigg, take a\u00a0brief diversion to Allan Bank,\u00a0a third Wordsworthian dwelling.<\/p>\n

About halfway along the\u00a0lake, a footpath drops to the water\u2019s edge, where mighty oaks display their golden crowns. The reflections of\u00a0the wooded slopes of Lord Cragg and Banerigg create\u00a0an arboreal kaleidoscope\u00a0on Grasmere\u2019s still surface.<\/div>\n

On blustery, changeable days, a host of iridescent rainbows can be seen on Dunmail Raise to the north.<\/p>\n

3. And so to tea<\/strong><\/p>\n

From Grasmere\u2019s weir, a\u00a0path runs alongside the River Rothay, through trees and their fallen leaves, before climbing\u00a0to a stone wall. Turn left and marvel at Rydal\u2019s seductive southern shores.<\/p>\n

To complete the circuit, cross the River Rothay near\u00a0St Mary\u2019s Church, built in 1824 on a spot selected by William\u00a0Wordsworth. Don\u2019t miss Rydal Hall\u2019s gardens, nor its excellent Old School Room tea shop<\/a>,\u00a0the perfect conclusion to this autumnal amble.<\/p>\n
