This spring, the handheld cameras detected the presence of a number of baby pine martens, known as kits, in the forest&#8217;s boxes.<\/p><ul><li><a href=\"navto:\/\/19eab623-40b1-42dc-951d-aa8ff49458c9\">Most magical forests to visit in the UK<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"navto:\/\/c16316b4-86ed-46cc-9cca-528bc0eaf623\">Woodland animals: 12 spectacular species to spot<\/a><\/li><\/ul><p>Trail cameras &#8211; fitted by the Dumfries and Galloway Pine Marten Group &#8211; were subsequently fitted to 14 of the boxes to document the movements of the families.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video controls=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/47\/2023\/09\/Pine-marten-mother-carries-kit-1.mp4\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A pine marten mother moves her kit out of the nest box to lower ground as it becomes more active<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Footage captured on one camera shows the mother relocating her month-old kits, one at a time, down to a denning site nearer ground level, in order to avoid injury as they become more mobile and playful.<\/p><h2 id=\"h-why-use-nest-boxes\">Why use nest boxes?<\/h2><p>The FLS team erect artificial nest boxes in areas where the <a href=\"\/\/dfbd72f8-e012-4156-8d46-8a8fb4ead813\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">red squirrel<\/a> population is under threat from disease-carrying grey squirrels. Pine martens are a natural tool to assist in grey squirrel management as they predate on squirrels &#8211; and prefer to hunt the slower-moving greys rather than the reds. <\/p><div class=\"wp-block-coblocks-gallery-carousel-page-dot-pagination\"\/><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><p>Over 100 artificial nest boxes were placed in Galloway Forest, a national red squirrel stronghold, in order to help boost pine marten numbers and control the grey squirrel population.<\/p><p>Slow breeders, pine martens like to den in safe, warm and dry tree cavities, which are in short supply in plantation and productive forests. Artificial dens provide alternative shelter &#8211; these roofed wooden boxes are installed around five metres off the ground, with wood shavings inside for cosy accommodation.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"676\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/47\/2023\/09\/Pine-marten-kit-scaled.jpg?fit=1024,1024\" alt=\"A pine marten kit among leaves\" class=\"wp-image-168108\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A pine marten kit crouches in leaf litter.\/Credit: Forestry and Land Scotland<\/figcaption><\/figure><h2>Monitoring pine martens<\/h2><p>The handheld thermal imaging cameras can detect a heat source in the pine marten den boxes all year round, especially during crucial periods such as in spring, when pine marten kits are born and also in winter, when den boxes are used for shelter in harsh weather.\u00a0<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/47\/2023\/09\/Thermal-imaging-box.jpg\" alt=\"Thermal image of an artificial nest box for pine martens\" class=\"wp-image-168116\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A thermal imaging camera reveals the presence of pine martens by their body heat.\/Credit: Land and Forestry Scotland<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Over summer, pine marten kits become more adventurous and begin making hunt trips away from the den. After sheltering over winter, they disperse to form their own territories the following spring.<\/p><p>Kim Kirkbride, FLS&#8217;s environment forester, said: \u201cUsing the non-invasive thermal imaging camera allows us to remotely monitor how many den boxes are in use, without disturbing the inhabitants.<\/p><p>\u201cWe can establish whether populations of pine marten are increasing and if they\u2019re breeding successfully.
