Slow down and explore on foot where possible \u2013 especially in <a href=\"\/\/3b6e7e24-b77d-442b-99b5-cbf178d1ef36\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wharfedale<\/a> \u2013 where <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dalesbus.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dalesbus<\/a> operates regular services up and down the valley to return you to your starting point. <\/p><ul><li><a href=\"\/\/392a85c3-0bdf-474b-942e-55525f1e3c89\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hotels in the Yorkshire Dales<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"\/\/adeb34ed-41bb-4856-a15c-3a874e5ed1fc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cottages in the Yorkshire Dales<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"\/\/fb501d27-76e3-4848-a0a5-72ffda6b578a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Campsites in the Yorkshire Dales<\/a><\/li><\/ul><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">One of Britain&#8217;s most famous long-distance walking trails, the Pennine Way, passes through the Yorkshire Dales \/Credit: Stephen Garnett<\/figcaption><\/figure><hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/><h2 id=\"h-yorkshire-dales-a-brief-history\">Yorkshire Dales \u2013 a brief history<\/h2><p>This maze of interlacing valleys was carved by repeated periods of glacial activity over the last 500,000 years, when retreating ice sheets scoured out deep fissures in the limestone, leaving lonely upland plateaus of peat, punctuated by stark, terraced escarpments such as <a href=\"\/\/ce1c2cb5-37d6-4181-9556-8e564e4904d5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ingleborough<\/a> and Pen-y-ghent \u2013 two of the famous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorkshiredales.org.uk\/things-to-do\/get-outdoors\/yorkshire-three-peaks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Yorkshire Three Peaks<\/a>.<\/p><p>Stepping back still further in time, the limestone, which is such an elemental feature of the Yorkshire Dales, was laid down some 350 million years ago and variations in the durability of this porous sedimentary rock produced the complex landforms we see today \u2013 characterised by precipitous cliffs with vast networks of interconnected caverns below the surface.<\/p><p>The word \u2018Dale\u2019 derives from the ancient Germanic word \u2018Dal\u2019 meaning valley. There\u2019s ample car parking and the visitor centre at the town hall on the High Street is an excellent place to orient yourself and plan the days ahead. <\/p><p>The 900-year-old castle is one of the best-preserved examples of a medieval fortress in England and the town centre is packed with cafes and pubs. Toast the symbol of the national park with a pint of Timothy Taylor\u2019s at the outstanding <a href=\"https:\/\/www.woollysheepinn.co.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Woolly Sheep<\/a> on \u2013 you guessed it \u2013 Sheep St!<\/p><h3>Settle-Carlisle Railway<\/h3><p>The famous Malham Cove is the most iconic of the limestone features in the Yorkshire Dales. The village itself and footpaths leading to the Cove will be busy, so to escape the crowds, take the scenic route over the moors to <a href=\"\/\/50f938ee-116a-431a-9906-182493f6721a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Settle<\/a>, starting point for the world-famous <a href=\"https:\/\/settle-carlisle.co.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Settle-Carlisle Railway<\/a>. <\/p><p>Hourly services operate to Carlisle with steam trains operated by West Coast Railways running through the summer months (advance booking essential). A return journey on England\u2019s most scenic railway is an unforgettable experience and a sustainable way to admire the scenery without negotiating the single-track roads of the Dales.<\/p><ul><li><a href=\"\/\/ce1c2cb5-37d6-4181-9556-8e564e4904d5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Walk: Ingleborough<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"\/\/50f938ee-116a-431a-9906-182493f6721a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Walk: Settle<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"Malham Tarn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Walk: Malham Tarn<\/a><\/li><\/ul><h3>Austwick and Ingleborough<\/h3><p>Visit Austwick and call in at possibly the best delicatessen in Yorkshire \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecourtyarddairy.co.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Courtyard Dairy<\/a> \u2013 where Andy Swinscoe and his team have built tasty showcase of artisan cheeses from the Dales and further afield.<\/p><p>Austwick itself is a gem of a village from where you can wander up Crummackdale and climb onto the vast expanse of limestone pavements nestling beneath the brooding profile of mighty <a href=\"\/\/ce1c2cb5-37d6-4181-9556-8e564e4904d5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ingleborough<\/a>. The summit is a challenging five-hour out-and-back hike for adventurous souls, but most people settle for a loop around the crags and woodland of Feizor, with coffee and cake at the charming <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elainestearooms.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Elaine\u2019s Tea Rooms<\/a>.<\/p><h3>Clapham and Ingleborough Cave<\/h3><p>At the top of Clapham village lies the entrance to <a href=\"\/\/0cf87621-753d-4d3d-b5d8-e817a08c16c5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ingleborough Cave<\/a> \u2013 a portal to the stunning subterranean world that lies beneath the fells. Visitors can venture 0.5 km into the caves along illuminated walkways in complete safety, but for expert cavers, the complex extends for miles underground, culminating in the vast cavern of Gaping Gill, whose main chamber could comfortably accommodate the dome of St Paul\u2019s Cathedral.\u00a0<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe title=\"The Yorkshire Dales National Park\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/UMuAlwk7UjU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Looking for more reasons to visit the Yorkshire Dales National Park?\/Credit: Yorkshire Dales National Park<\/figcaption><\/figure><h3>Kirkby Lonsdale<\/h3><p>The elegant Georgian market town of Kirkby Lonsdale is well worth a visit. Park in Market Square \u2013 except on Thursdays, when it\u2019s still occupied by the weekly charter market \u2013 and browse among the boutique shops and cafes before wandering through the grounds of St Mary\u2019s Church to reach Ruskin\u2019s View. This spectacular viewpoint overlooking the River Lune was immortalised in oils by JMW Turner and described as one of England\u2019s \u2018loveliest views\u2019 by Ruskin. <\/p><h3>Sedbergh<\/h3><p>Head up the A683 to the \u2018book town\u2019 of Sedbergh. This handsome stone-built town is the gateway to the <a href=\"\/\/81e1f0d4-058d-4e45-ac2e-600b830ef03a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Howgills<\/a> \u2013 an oft-overlooked range of 2000ft hills sandwiched between the better-known summits of the Lakes and the Dales.\u00a0<\/p><h3>Swaledale<\/h3><p>Swaledale&#8217;s rich upland pastures are enclosed within an angular gridwork of dry-stone walls to form a regimented progression of meadows which have been restored to their former glory \u2013 exploding into a riot of spring wildflowers during May. <\/p><p>The most spectacular meadows can be found at Thwaite and <a href=\"\/\/72e6f63f-9cee-4417-a7de-424b462f565b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Muker<\/a> \u2013 the perfect spot for a picnic beside the River Swale. From Muker, climb south over Askrigg Common before descending into Wensleydale \u2013 one of the longest of the Dales. At the head of the valley stands the fascinating village of <a href=\"\/\/bbacec6a-69e7-4e90-9386-e26bbb49c1e5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hawes<\/a>, while Leyburn \u2013 the setting for the original BBC adaptation of James Herriot\u2019s <em>All Creatures Great and Small<\/em> \u2013 guards the eastern entrance to the dale.<\/p><h3>Wensleydale<\/h3><p>It&#8217;s easy to spend an entire day exploring the delights of Upper and Lower <a href=\"\/\/2fdab94a-5960-47af-9add-86e69e812efe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wensleydale<\/a>. Here, the <a href=\"\/\/ff407e9d-1046-4172-bb40-f02dbd0f7eab\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">River Ure<\/a> flows over a series of cascades at Aysgarth and Redmire and past a string of fortifications from the Roman Fort at Bainbridge to the stunning medieval edifices at Castle Bolton and Middleham.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/47\/2023\/09\/Bolton-Abbey-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Autumn falls upon Bolton Abbey in the Yorkshire Dales\" class=\"wp-image-168473\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Bolton Abbey in autumn\/Credit: Stephen Garnett<\/figcaption><\/figure><h3>Wharfedale<\/h3><p>But yet more delights lie ahead as you swing south to travel through the heart of the national park along perhaps and prettiest and most varied dale of them all: Wharfedale. Stretching some 20 miles from Cray to Bolton Abbey, Upper Wharfedale is simply sublime at any time of year. <\/p><p>From Aysgarth, head south-west along lonely Bishopdale then meander beside the River Wharfe through a succession of picture postcard villages: Cray, Hubberholme, Kettlewell, Kilnsey. All of them are gorgeous and most of them are home to at least one welcoming village pub dispensing local cask ales, hearty food and \u2013 if there\u2019s a chill in the air \u2013 roaring log fires.\u00a0<\/p><p>The great novelist and thinker J.B. Priestley spent many a happy hour wandering up and down Wharfedale. His favourite \u2018local\u2019 was The George in Hubberholme, where the annual tradition of the \u2018Hubberholme Parliament\u2019 \u2013 a candle-lit auction of grazing rights \u2013 still takes place in January each year.<\/p><p>Further down the valley, it would be easy to get distracted by the Dickensian delights of <a href=\"\/\/24e0f23c-8fc5-460c-8300-7eef2ee949a4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Grassington<\/a> \u2013 the valley\u2019s principal settlement, but there\u2019s much more to explore: Burnsall, Appletreewick and the stunning <a href=\"\/\/8365bc85-fb10-4e86-961f-56f7bd344342\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bolton Abbey<\/a> estate, where a riverside walk among the bluebells of Strid Gardens, followed by afternoon tea at the <a href=\"https:\/\/devonshirehotels.co.uk\/cavendish-pavilion\/\">Cavendish Pavillion<\/a> caf\u00e9 is a must.<\/p><hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/><h2>Yorkshire Dales villages<\/h2><p>What do you imagine when you think of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/go-outdoors\/walks\/best-walks-yorkshire-dales\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Yorkshire Dales<\/a>? Drystone walls, verdant river valleys, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/wildlife\/how-to-identify\/native-british-wildflowers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wildflowers<\/a> meadows? Or wild moorlands, stately homes, parklands and gardens? What will certainly come to mind is the historic\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/uk-travel\/holiday-ideas\/best-towns-and-villages-to-visit-this-winter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">market towns<\/a>\u00a0and charming riverside villages.<\/p><p>You could easily spend a week in these small Dale settlements or even a month. Discover our pick of the <a href=\"\/\/aab70c76-3bd1-45e8-9da6-17cdab771698\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">prettiest villages in the Yorkshire Dales<\/a> to visit.<\/p><hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/><h2>Yorkshire Dales walks<\/h2><p>There are 1,633 miles of footpaths and 384 miles of bridleways in the Yorkshire Dales, offering visitors the chance to spot the national park&#8217;s 1,000 species of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/wildlife\/insects-invertebrates\/guide-to-britains-moths-species-identification-and-why-they-are-important\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">moths<\/a>, its 100 species of nesting birds and more than 30 species of mammals.<\/p><p>The Yorkshire Dales may be land-bound, but what it lacks in coastal drama it makes up for in magnificent moorlands, deep valleys and striking limestone crags, from the villages and towns of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/go-outdoors\/walks\/settle-to-stainforth-yorkshire\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Settle<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/go-outdoors\/walks\/hawes-aysgill-force-and-hardraw-force-north-yorkshire\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hawes<\/a>\u00a0to the wild landscapes of Malham Cove and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/go-outdoors\/walks\/walk-malham-tarn-north-yorkshire\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Malham Tarn<\/a>.<\/p><p>There are many great walks in the Dales, from the epic <a href=\"\/\/912c1f7c-ab62-4f93-b9ea-bb85a3c6c22a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pennine Way<\/a> to more leisurely day walks.
