To celebrate the 60th anniversary of Doctor Who<\/em>, we take a look at some of the most spectacular UK settings of the time-travelling series, which has filmed all over the UK – and especially in Wales. Featuring David Tennant, Peter Capaldi, Matt Smith, Jodie Whittaker, Tom Baker and more as the charismatic Time Lord, there are now over 800 episodes available on iPlayer, so see if you can spot the location…<\/p>

Built in 1271, the impressive medieval Welsh castle and its teetering tower appears in several Doctor Who<\/em> episodes, including the unnerving two-parter The Rebel Flesh<\/em> \/ The Almost People<\/em> (2011), in which the castle is reimagined as The Monastery, as well as The End of Time<\/em>, The Eternity Trap,<\/em> The Vampires of Venice<\/em>, Lost in Time<\/em> and The Power of Three<\/em>. <\/p>

National Botanic Garden of Wales, Carmarthenshire<\/h3>

Transport yourself to the famed Great Glasshouse at the National Botanic Garden of Wales\/Credit: Getty<\/figcaption><\/figure>
Designed by Sir Norman Foster, the largest single-span glasshouse in the world appears in episode The Waters of Mars<\/em> (2009), starring David Tennant as the Tenth Doctor. The National Botanic Garden of Wales becomes Bowie Base One, humanity’s first colony on Mars, with the Great Glasshouse transformed into Biodome 1. Rhossili Bay, Gower Peninsula<\/h3>

Become an interplanetary explorer on Rhossili Bay’s three-mile-long sandy beach.\/ Credit: Getty<\/figcaption><\/figure>
The most westerly bay on Wales’ Gower peninsula<\/a>, with a beautiful long stretch of sand, Rhossili Bay is considered one of the most beautiful beaches in Wales. In the episode New Earth<\/em> (2006), it becomes a new planet resettled by humans. As Rose and the Doctor arrive five billion years in the future, landing on the windswept apple-grass, the distinctive shape of Worm’s Head reveals our true location. <\/p>
Look out for the famous sea serpent and sandy bay at the outset of New Earth<\/em><\/a> on iPlayer, and make like a Time Lord on this 7.8 mile return walk from Rhossili Bay to Paviland Cavern<\/a>.<\/p>
Powis Castle, Powys<\/h3>

Broadcast in 1981, Warrior\u2019s Gate<\/em> starred Tom Baker as the Fourth Doctor, and many of the scenes are set against the striking terraced gardens of the 12th-century Powis Castle.<\/p>
The medieval castle is now managed by the National Trust and is open to the public, so you can do a spot of time-travelling yourself on this pretty walk around Powis Castle<\/a>.<\/p>

That seems appropriate, given that the otherworldly landscape once lay at the bottom of a warm, shallow sea near the Equator, with blue-grey rocks formed when dinosaurs roamed the Earth.<\/p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/go-outdoors\/days-out\/dunraven-bay-vale-of-glamorgan\">Dunraven Bay<\/a> makes a fitting backdrop for the second farewell scene between Rose and David Tennant’s Doctor Who at Bad Wolf Bay – catch it from 50.35 in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/iplayer\/episode\/b00cgnjr\/doctor-who-series-4-13-journeys-end\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Journey’s End<\/em> on iPlayer<\/a>.<\/p><hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/><h3>Tredegar House, Monmouthshire<\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"3000\" height=\"1996\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/47\/2018\/12\/Tredegar-House-e5cbf52.jpg\" alt=\"Country house\" class=\"wp-image-33855\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Tread the boards of Tredegar House near Newport.\/ Credit: Getty<\/figcaption><\/figure>Are there any sections of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationaltrust.org.uk\/visit\/wales\/tredegar-house\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tredegar House<\/a> that Doctor Who<\/em> hasn’t filmed? Set in a 90-acre park, this 17th-century restoration mansion in Newport has appeared in at least 10 Doctor Who<\/em> episodes, by our count. David Tennant made his debut as the Tenth Doctor in the episode The Christmas Invasion<\/em> (2005), which featured Tredegar House during a broadcast by the Penelope Wilton’s Prime Minister. <\/p>The basement became a dungeon in New Earth<\/em>; the house became the Torchwood Estate in Tooth and Claw<\/em> and it also appeared in The Girl in the Fireplace<\/em>, Army of Ghosts<\/em> (all 2006), Human Nature\/ Family of Blood<\/em> (2007) and The Unicorn and the Wasp<\/em>. David Morrissey strolled its grounds in The Next Doctor <\/em>(2008), in which the stable and courtyards became a Victorian London on Christmas Eve in 1851. <\/p>Plus, it pops up in The End of Time 1 and 2<\/em> (2009-2010), The impossible Astronaut<\/em> (2011), The Woman Who Lived<\/em> (2015) and Spyfall, Part 2<\/em> (2020). So if you’re any kind of serious Doctor Who fan, you should get there pronto. <\/p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/iplayer\/episode\/b0074f9p\/doctor-who-the-christmas-invasion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Watch The Christmas Invasion on iPlayer.<\/a><\/p>Tredegar House, Pencarn Way, Newport, NP10 8YW<\/strong><\/p><hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/><h3>Dyffryn Gardens, Glamorgan<\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"698\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/47\/2023\/10\/GettyImages-164717627-scaled.jpg?fit=1024,1024\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-170350\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The National Trust’s Dyffryn House is open to the public, so trail the Time Lord here.\/ Credit: Getty<\/figcaption><\/figure>These beautiful botanical gardens, designed at the end of the 19th century and completed in 1909, grace the grounds of Dyffryn House, an ancient estate near Cardiff dating to 640AD. <\/p>David Tennant’s Doctor Who first landed here in 2006 for the episode Tooth and Claw<\/em>, which featured the estate’s Castle Room and courtyard, and The Girl in the Fireplace<\/em>, in which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationaltrust.org.uk\/visit\/wales\/dyffryn-gardens\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dyffryn Gardens<\/a> become the gardens of the Palace of Versailles in 18th-century France. Starring Matt Smith and Jenna Coleman, this 77-minute episode celebrated the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who<\/em>, and featured previous cast stars David Tennant, Billie Piper, John Hurt and Tom Baker. Quite the Whovian knees-up. Doctor Who wanders the moated, medieval castle’s torch-lit corridors and chambers, discovering that the monarch is a robotic weapon called Kamelion.
