{"id":31860,"date":"2023-11-03T11:52:08","date_gmt":"2023-11-03T10:52:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4ba5781e-5b5c-4943-95f5-ea8d69134d7b"},"modified":"2023-11-03T13:39:30","modified_gmt":"2023-11-03T12:39:30","slug":"jellyfish-boom-sightings-up-32-in-uk-waters","status":"publish","type":"rss_feed","link":"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/bbccountryfile\/rss_feed\/jellyfish-boom-sightings-up-32-in-uk-waters\/","title":{"rendered":"Jellyfish boom: sightings up 32% in UK waters"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\">A new report by the Marine Conservation Society has revealed a huge rise in jellyfish sightings in UK and Irish waters over the past year. <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By countryfile\n      <\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Friday, 03 November 2023 at 10:52 AM<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcsuk.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Marine Conservation Society<\/a>\u2019s (MCS) annual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcsuk.org\/what-you-can-do\/citizen-science\/sightings\/dive-into-the-data\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wildlife Sightings report<\/a> has been released, revealing a 32% rise in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/wildlife\/marine-life\/jellyfish-guide-uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">jellyfish<\/a> sightings in UK and Irish waters.<\/p><p>The most common sighting was the barrel jellyfish (26.7% of total sightings), followed by the lion\u2019s mane\u00a0jellyfish (17.7%). 11% of the jellyfish were seen in large blooms of over 100 individuals \u2013 an increase of 57% from last year.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>The annual Wildlife Sightings report focusses on jellyfish and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/marine-animals\/sea-turtle-types\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">marine turtles<\/a> (or sea turtles), which predate on jellyfish. Numbers of sightings we receive can also depend on the awareness of our sightings programme and the \u2018wow factor\u2019 of jellyfish people encounter. \u00a0<\/p><p>\u201cThis year seems to have been a particularly good year for barrel jellyfish \u2013 one of our chunkiest jellyfish species that can occur in mind-boggling numbers when conditions are favourable. It\u2019s only by observing trends over many years that we can start to suggest reasons for change.\u201d \u00a0<\/p><p>Justine Millard, Head of Volunteering and Citizen Science at the MCS, added, \u201cThe data on jellyfish and turtles that volunteers submit\u00a0plays a vital role in understanding the changes occurring in our marine ecosystems, and help us to protect our seas. We urge anyone who has spotted a jellyfish or turtle to report it to us to continue to build a picture of our seas and the incredible life within them. A huge thanks to all the volunteers who have submitted data to us this past year.\u201d\u00a0<\/p><ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/news\/wild-oysters-project-north-east-england\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Oyster reef the &#8216;size of a football pitch&#8217; created in North East England<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/wildlife\/birds\/guide-to-british-seabirds-how-to-identify-and-where-to-see-them\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">British seabird guide<\/a><\/li><\/ul><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1792\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/47\/2023\/11\/Mauve-stinger-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Mauve stinger jellyfish in water\" class=\"wp-image-171383\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The Mauve stinger jellyfish accounted for 0.5% of the sightings\/Credit: Peter Bardsley, MCS<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The most frequently reported\u00a0species during the reporting period was the barrel jellyfish, which accounted for almost 27% of total sightings (467), 21% up from the previous year\u2019s results.\u00a0Other species included the moon jellyfish, compass jellyfish and blue jellyfish.<\/p><p>The MCS also records reports of marine turtles, which feed on jellyfish.\u00a0Six of the world\u2019s seven marine turtle species have been spotted in UK and Irish seas.
