It\u2019s hard to disagree. For 192 miles, this route meanders across northern England\u2019s three most spectacular National Parks \u2013 the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/go-outdoors\/walks\/best-walks-in-the-lake-district\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lake District<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/go-outdoors\/yorkshire-dales\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Yorkshire Dales<\/a> and the North York Moors.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>In 2004, a panel of experts voted the Coast to Coast the second-best long-distance trail in the world \u2013 pipped to the top spot by New Zealand\u2019s Milford Track. It\u2019s hardly surprising then that the Government announced in 2022 that it would be upgraded to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/go-outdoors\/days-out\/guide-to-the-uks-national-trails-history-and-walking-routes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Trail<\/a> \u2013 with all the funding implications that brings.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>Thousands of people complete the crossing every year, many travelling from Europe, North America and even the Antipodes to enjoy some of the finest and most varied walking the UK has to offer. They all leave with memories, and sometimes even friendships, that will last a lifetime.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/go-outdoors\/walks\/south-downs-way\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">South Downs Way trail guide<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/go-outdoors\/walks\/west-highland-way\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">West Highland Way trail guide<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/go-outdoors\/walks\/pennine-way\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pennine Way trail guide<\/a><\/li><\/ul><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The Coast to Coast path passes spectacular Ullswater in the Lake District\/Credit: Amy Bateman<\/figcaption><\/figure><hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/><h2 id=\"h-coast-to-coast-route\">Coast to Coast route<\/h2><p>Most people tackle the route from west to east, so they\u2019ve got the prevailing weather, particularly the wind, at their backs. This means starting the journey at St Bees in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/go-outdoors\/walks\/best-walks-in-cumbria\">Cumbria<\/a> \u2013 reached by train from Carlisle on the West Coast Main Line \u2013 and concluding at the North Yorkshire fishing village of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/go-outdoors\/walks\/walk-robin-hoods-bay-north-yorkshire\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Robin Hood\u2019s Bay<\/a>.<\/p><p>The Coast to Coast walk offers some of the finest and most varied scenery in the UK \u2013 from Lakeland\u2019s gnarly mountains to the heather-clad moors of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/go-outdoors\/walks\/best-walks-north-yorkshire\">North Yorkshire<\/a>. En route, you\u2019ll encounter the medieval ruins of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.english-heritage.org.uk\/visit\/places\/shap-abbey\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Shap Abbey<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.english-heritage.org.uk\/visit\/places\/richmond-castle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Richmond Castle<\/a>, and walk through landscapes dotted with the fascinating remains of our industrial heritage. By spreading it over 13 days, daily distances range from about 8 to 23 miles. It\u2019s a hilly route, so shouldn\u2019t be underestimated.<\/p><p>Even if you choose the low-level options, expect to clock up 8,534m (28,000ft) of ascent. Only another 305m (1,000ft) and you\u2019ll have climbed the equivalent of Everest.<em>\u00a0<\/em>The hardest sections are through the Lake District, with daily altitude gains of up to 1,280m (4200ft) over demanding terrain if you choose high-level options. Using a luggage transfer company can help lighten the load.\u00a0<\/p><p>Of course, you don\u2019t have to do it in one go. It\u2019s not uncommon for Coast to Coasters to split their journey in two at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/countryfile\/kirkby-stephen-cumbria\">Kirkby Stephen<\/a> \u2013 about 80 miles into the route \u2013 taking advantage of Pennine market town\u2019s station on the Settle to Carlisle Railway.\u00a0<\/p><hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/><h2 id=\"h-when-is-the-best-time-to-walk-the-coast-to-coast-path\">When is the best time to walk the Coast to Coast path?<\/h2><p>The best time to walk the trail is from April to October, when northern England\u2019s weather is at its best. As the route turns inland, the Lake District fells appear in the distance, beckoning you with the promise of many days of adventure ahead. The journey has begun\u2026\u00a0<\/p><p>Overnight: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shepherdsarms.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Shepherds Arms<\/a>, Ennerdale Bridge<\/p><h3 id=\"h-day-2-ennerdale-bridge-to-rosthwaite\">Day 2\u00a0 \u2013 Ennerdale Bridge to Rosthwaite<\/h3><p><em>15 miles (24km)<\/em><\/p><p>Entering the Lake District, the route hugs Ennerdale Water\u2019s shores and heads into forests frequented by deer and red squirrels. Choose from a high-level ridge or continue beyond the remote Black Sail hostel towards the valley head. Either way, the day ends by crossing the fells and dropping into oak-cloaked Borrowdale.\u00a0<\/p><p>Overnight: <a href=\"https:\/\/hazelbankhotel.co.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hazel Bank Country House Hotel<\/a>, Rosthwaite<\/p><ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/go-outdoors\/walks\/ennerdale-lake-cumbria\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ennerdale Valley day walk<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/go-outdoors\/walk-buttermere-and-ennerdale-cumbria\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Buttermere and Ennerdale walk<\/a><\/li><\/ul><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"684\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/47\/2023\/11\/Ennerdale.png?fit=1024,1024\" alt=\"Green valley and river\" class=\"wp-image-171744\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The walk climbs up through Ennerdale\/Credit: Jake Graham<\/figcaption><\/figure><h3 id=\"h-day-3-rosthwaite-to-grasmere\">Day 3\u00a0\u2013 Rosthwaite to Grasmere<\/h3><p><em>7.5 miles (12km)<\/em><\/p><p>No messing about today. You\u2019re in Lakeland proper now, so there\u2019s just a short valley walk before the path clambers up the side of Lining Crag and negotiates boggy ground to reach Greenup Edge. Choose from a peaceful valley stroll into Grasmere or a splendid, undulating ridge walk over Helm Crag.\u00a0<\/p><p>If you have time you could pay homage to the great poet William Wordsworth when you arrive in Grasmere and visit his home <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/go-outdoors\/days-out\/dove-cottage-cumbria\">Dove Cottage<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>Overnight: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lancrigg.co.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lancrigg<\/a>, Grasmere<\/p><h3 id=\"h-day-4-grasmere-to-patterdale\">Day 4\u00a0\u2013 Grasmere to Patterdale<\/h3><p><em>8 miles (12.5km)<\/em><\/p><p>Leaving the idyllic valley, you reach the exciting mountain environment of Grisedale Tarn. The easiest option from here is the valley route through glorious Grisedale; St Sunday Crag provides a straightforward high-fell alternative; or you can climb <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/go-outdoors\/walks\/helvellyn-striding-edge-lake-district\">Helvellyn<\/a> and tackle Striding Edge. The latter requires surefootedness on exposed, rocky ground.\u00a0<\/p><p>Overnight: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yha.org.uk\/hostel\/yha-patterdale\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">YHA Patterdale<\/a><\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1920\" height=\"2560\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/47\/2023\/11\/Coast-to-Coast-walking-trail-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Cottage in the hills\" class=\"wp-image-171708\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Cottage near Patterdale\/Credit: Amy Bateman<\/figcaption><\/figure><h3 id=\"h-day-5-patterdale-to-shap\">Day 5\u00a0 \u2013 Patterdale to Shap<\/h3><p><em>15.5 miles (25km)<\/em><\/p><p>This is the longest stretch of sustained fell-walking so far. Watching for red deer, climb to beautiful Angle Tarn and then Kidsty Pike. At 780m, this is the highest point on the entire route for those choosing valley options. Dropping to Haweswater, a long section of shoreline path follows before leaving the Lakes via the picturesque ruins of Shap Abbey.\u00a0<\/p><p>If it has been a dry summer and water levels are low you could spot remnant of the lost village Mardale. The village was evacuated in 1935 so the valley could be flooded to create the reservoir but hints of what lies below can still be seen, like the bridge and main road.\u00a0<\/p><p>Overnight: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.coast2coast.co.uk\/thehermitage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Hermitage<\/a>, Shap<\/p><h3 id=\"h-day-6-shap-to-kirkby-stephen\">Day 6\u00a0\u2013 Shap to Kirkby Stephen<\/h3><p><em>20 miles (32km)<\/em><\/p><p>Wave goodbye to rugged Lakeland and say hello to the softer limestone landscapes of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/go-outdoors\/yorkshire-dales\">Yorkshire Dales<\/a>. Rare butterflies and wildflowers thrive on the open grassland and low-lying heather moorland of Westmorland. Some walkers break this long day at Orton, about one mile off the main route.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>Overnight: <a href=\"https:\/\/kirkbystephenhostel.co.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kirkby Stephen Hostel<\/a><\/p><h3 id=\"h-day-7-kirkby-stephen-to-keld\">Day 7\u00a0\u2013 Kirkby Stephen to Keld<\/h3><p><em>11.2 miles (18km)<\/em><\/p><p>Dragging yourself away from Kirkby Stephen, climb to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/go-outdoors\/walks\/the-nine-standards-cumbria\">Nine Standards<\/a> on the peaty moorland of the North Pennines. Walkers who enjoy solitude will love this sparsely populated section, crossing the English watershed before entering Swaledale near the cosy collection of farms and cottages that make up Keld.\u00a0<\/p><p>Overnight: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.keldlodge.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Keld Lodge<\/a>, Keld<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"2560\" height=\"2560\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/47\/2023\/11\/Coast-to-Coast-walk-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Walker in the hills\" class=\"wp-image-171695\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The best time to walk the trail is from April to October, when northern England\u2019s weather is at its best\/Credit: Amy Bateman<\/figcaption><\/figure><h3 id=\"h-day-8-keld-to-reeth\">Day 8 \u2013 Keld to Reeth\u00a0<\/h3><p><em>10.5 miles (17km)<\/em><\/p><p>Beyond the waterfalls of Keld, Coast to Coasters have a choice \u2013 the\u00a0moorland for atmospheric reminders of the area\u2019s lead mining heritage; or the valley route beside the River Swale for iconic Dales meadows studded with field barns, dry-stone walls and wildflowers. The latter has the bonus of a pub en route \u2013 the Kings Head in Gunnerside.<em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p><p>Overnight: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theburgoyne.co.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Burgoyne<\/a>, Reeth<\/p><h3 id=\"h-day-9-reeth-to-richmond\">Day 9 \u2013 Reeth to Richmond<\/h3><p><em>10 miles (16km)<\/em><\/p><p>After fairly long days involving high fells and windswept moors, today is easier as the journey downstream through Swaledale continues. Your overnight stop, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/go-outdoors\/richmond-north-yorkshire-places-to-stay-where-to-eat-and-things-to-do\">Richmond<\/a>, feels like a sprawling metropolis after the tiny settlements that have gone before. Allow time to explore its ancient alleyways and visit the castle.\u00a0<\/p><p>Overnight: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefrenchgate.co.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Frenchgate<\/a>, Richmond\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><h3 id=\"h-day-10-richmond-to-ingleby-cross\">Day 10\u00a0\u2013 Richmond to Ingleby Cross<\/h3><p><em>23 miles (36.5km)<\/em><\/p><p>Let\u2019s not beat about the bush&#8230; after the Lakes and the Dales, the Vale of Mowbray\u2019s flat farmland is uninspiring. Some walkers split this section of country lanes and field paths at Danby Wiske; others rush through as quickly as possible. See it as a means to an end \u2013 the North York Moors are just around the corner\u2026\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>Overnight: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.inglebyhousefarm.co.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ingleby House Farm<\/a>, Ingleby Arncliffe\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"2560\" height=\"2560\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/47\/2023\/11\/Coast-to-Coast-1-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Walker in the hills\" class=\"wp-image-171706\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Most walkers complete the trail in two weeks\/Credit: Amy Bateman<\/figcaption><\/figure><h3 id=\"h-day-11-ingleby-cross-to-clay-bank-top\">Day 11\u00a0 \u2013 Ingleby Cross to Clay Bank Top<\/h3><p><em>11.5 miles (18.5km)<\/em><\/p><p>Gird your loins on entering the North York Moors, the third and final National Park\u2026 An undulating route along the airy escarpment edge of the Cleveland Hills results in an epic day, with about 3000ft of ascent, but the far-reaching views detract from any sore feet. Refuel at Lordstones Caf\u00e9, eight miles in.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>Overnight: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.the-buck-inn.co.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Buck Inn,<\/a> Chop Gate (shuttle service to Clay Bank Top, 2.5 miles away)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><h3 id=\"h-day-12-clay-bank-top-to-glaisdale\">Day 12 \u2013 Clay Bank Top to Glaisdale<\/h3><p><em>18.3 miles (29.5km)<\/em><\/p><p>A short climbs leads back on to open moorland where only the calls of grouse and waders break the silence. Much of the walk follows good tracks, including a disused mineral railway, which make easy work of the long day. The Lion Inn at Blakey, one of England\u2019s remotest pubs, is passed just after the half-way point.\u00a0<\/p><p>Overnight: <a href=\"https:\/\/arncliffearmsbb.co.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Arncliffe Arms<\/a>, Glaisdale\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><h3 id=\"h-day-13-glaisdale-to-robin-hood-s-bay\">Day 13 \u2013 Glaisdale to Robin Hood\u2019s Bay<\/h3><p><em>18.5 miles (30km)<\/em><\/p><p>Drop into serpentine valleys, calling in at villages that hug the steep-sided, wooded banks of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/go-outdoors\/walks\/river-esk-north-yorkshire\">River Esk<\/a> and its tributaries. The crossing then ends as it began \u2013 with an exhilarating cliff-top walk. Triumphant, drop into charming <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/go-outdoors\/walks\/walk-robin-hoods-bay-north-yorkshire\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Robin Hood\u2019s Bay<\/a> and dip your toes in the North Sea.
