What is a farrier? How much do they earn? We explain all you need to know about one of the world’s oldest professions. <\/p>

In simple terms, a farrier is a person who shoes horses. Shoeing horses is an ancient practice that dates back centuries. It is believed <\/strong>Celts were probably the first people to protect their horses’ feet with shoes.<\/strong> <\/a><\/p>

Today, farriery is a regulated profession, and shoeing horses can only be carried out by qualified professionals.<\/p>

Farrier and lecturer Dean Bland from the Hereford School of Farriery<\/a> explains more about farriers.<\/p>

How long does it take to train as a farrier?<\/h2>
It takes four years to train as a farrier, which includes 23 weeks of college-based training.<\/p>
<\/div><\/figure><h2>What’s the difference between a farrier and a blacksmith?<\/h2><p>Farriery is a regulated profession under the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.legislation.gov.uk\/ukpga\/1975\/35\">Farriers Registration Act 1975<\/a>.\u00a0Farriers are legally qualified and registered professionals who support equine welfare through the shoeing and trimming of equines’ (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/mammals\/donkey-vs-horse-whats-the-difference\">horses and donkeys<\/a>) feet. <\/p><p>Blacksmiths, as their name suggests, produce metal objects through the forging process. It is both physically and mentally challenging, but if you have the capacity it is an immensely rewarding career.\u00a0<\/p><hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/><p><em>Main image: Dean Bland in action, Hereford School of Farriery<\/em><\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellequine.co.uk\/dean-bland\">Dean Bland<\/a> has been a farrier for more than 20 years and is a lecturer at the Hereford School of Farriery at <a href=\"https:\/\/hlnsc.ac.uk\/\">Herefordshire, Ludlow & North Shropshire College<\/a>.<\/p><p>He also worked as part of the Equestrian Support Team for the equestrian sports at the 2016 Rio Olympics.<\/p><p>As well as being a qualified farrier, Dean holds a Graduate Diploma in Equine Locomotor Research from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rvc.ac.uk\/\">Royal Veterinary College<\/a>.<\/p><p\/> <\/body><\/html>\n<hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is a farrier?
