The palmate leaves are made up of 5, 6 or 7 toothed leaves that radiate from the main stem.<\/p><ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/go-outdoors\/first-signs-of-spring\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">First signs of spring<\/a><\/li><\/ul><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/47\/2023\/11\/Horse-chestnut-leaves-1-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Horse chestnut leaf\" class=\"wp-image-172562\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The leaves radiate from a central stem\/Credit: Getty<\/figcaption><\/figure><hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/><h3>Conkers<\/h3><p>There is an irresistible excitement when breaking open the spiked husk of a horse chestnut to get the first glimpse of that shiny russet <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/wildlife\/trees-plants\/how-to-identify-nuts-and-seeds-from-12-familiar-british-trees\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">conker<\/a> within, soon to be skewered and dangled on a piece of string.<\/p><p>The 17th-century diarist and forester John Evelyn suggested that the fruit of the chestnut could cure horses of broken wind, and the tree was named accordingly.
