In fact, seen from above, 50 percent of London is a mosaic of green and blue, thanks to a vast network of woodlands, parks, gardens, rivers and canals.<\/p><p>All this nature makes the Big Smoke a surprisingly good place to go walking. autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A one-minute aerial tour of London\/Credit: Alex Film<\/figcaption><\/figure><hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/><h2>London walks<\/h2><h3 id=\"h-hampstead-heath\">Hampstead Heath<\/h3><p><em>2.9 miles \/ 4.7km | 2 hours | easy | 73m ascent<\/em><\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A bright sunny but cold day on Hampstead Heath in West London\/Credit: Getty<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Hampstead Heath is London\u2019s green lung, a 760-acre sprawl of meadows, woodland and deep pools.\u00a0<\/p><p>In the 18<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0century, the Heath became a popular escape for city dwellers in need of fresh air, and it\u2019s still a peaceful haven for Londoners today \u2013 and so vast that you might feel like you\u2019re in a rural idyll even in the heart of the city, and find yourself with a sweep of green space all to yourself.\u00a0<\/p><p>The Heath\u2019s crowning glory are its three bathing pools \u2013 one for women, one for men and one mixed \u2013 and this walk starts and ends by the first two, known as the Highgate Ponds, and also passes the mixed pool along the way.<\/p><p>This iconic parkland has so many trails criss-crossing it that you can make your walk as short or as long as you like, but this three-mile circular is a great introduction to the delights of the Heath.\u00a0<\/p><ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/go-outdoors\/walks\/hampstead-heath-london\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hampstead Heath walk<\/a><\/li><\/ul><hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/><h3 id=\"h-finsbury-park-and-abney-park-cemetery\">Finsbury Park and Abney Park Cemetery<\/h3><p><em>3.8 miles \/ 6.1km | 2 hours | easy | 23m ascent<\/em><\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"5472\" height=\"3648\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/47\/2022\/01\/Abney-Park-Cemetery-fe670a7.jpg\" alt=\"Old and abandoned monuments and graves in Abney Park Cemetery in Autumn\" class=\"wp-image-147973\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Old and abandoned monuments and graves in Abney Park Cemetery\/Credit: Getty<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>This route between the stations at Finsbury Park and Stoke Newington takes in two parkland lakes, a lengthy riverside walk, a scenic reservoir and a wetland nature reserve \u2013 it&#8217;s a water-lovers\u2019 dream.\u00a0<\/p><p>The walk includes Finsbury Park \u2013 look out for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/wildlife\/birds\/moorhen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">moorhens<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/wildlife\/birds\/coot\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">coots<\/a>, pochards and tufted ducks; the New River and its unexpected crop of reeds; the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wildlondon.org.uk\/nature-reserves\/woodberry-wetlands\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Woodberry Wetlands Nature Reserve<\/a>\u00a0(open 9.30am-4pm); Birthplace of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/go-outdoors\/parkrun\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Parkrun<\/a>\u00a0phenomenon, this former royal hunting ground attracts walkers and wildlife lovers who come to decompress while watching deer wander through ancient\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/wildlife\/trees-plants\/oak-tree-guide-lifespan-uk-species-identification\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">oak trees<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/wildlife\/birds\/skylark\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">skylarks<\/a>\u00a0hover over breeze-stoked meadows and statuesque herons hunt in fish-filled waterways.<\/p><ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/go-outdoors\/walks\/bushy-park-hampton-court-park-london\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hampton Court Park and Bushy Park walk<\/a><\/li><\/ul><h3 id=\"h-sydenham-hill-wood\">Sydenham Hill Wood<\/h3><p><em>1.5 miles \/ 2.4km | 1 hour | easy | 52m ascent<\/em><\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/47\/2023\/11\/Sydenham-Hill-Wood-geograph-Peter-Trimming-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Sydenham Hill Wood bridge\" class=\"wp-image-173903\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The old bridge at Sydenham Hill Wood\/Credit: Peter Trimming, Geograph<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Sloping from one of London\u2019s highest points down to the South Circular, this is the last remnant of the ancient Great North Wood that\u00a0once stretched from the Thames to Croydon.\u00a0<\/p><p>Now home to\u00a0rare\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/wildlife\/how-to-identify\/guide-to-british-fungi-where-to-find-and-how-to-identify\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fungi<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/wildlife\/insects-invertebrates\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">insects<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/wildlife\/birds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">birds<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/wildlife\/mammals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">mammals<\/a>, and more than 200\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/wildlife\/trees-plants\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tree and plant\u00a0<\/a>species \u2013 there are\u00a0plenty of fallen trees, branches and logs to climb, swing from or sit on.\u00a0The dense tree cover blocks out the city\u2019s sounds and sights, and reveals a\u00a0railway tunnel that took Victorians to the Crystal Palace, a folly, and a memorable bridge\u00a0\u2013 and a spectacular view of central London landmarks.<\/p><ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/go-outdoors\/walks\/sydenham-hill-wood-london\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sydenham Hill Wood walk<\/a><\/li><\/ul><hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/><h3 id=\"h-queen-elizabeth-olympic-park\">Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park<\/h3><p><em>2.8 miles \/ 4.5km | 1.5 hours | easy | 58m ascent<\/em><\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1082\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/47\/2023\/11\/Flower-bed-Queen-Elizabeth-Olympic-Park.jpg\" alt=\"Flower bed in London park\" class=\"wp-image-174028\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Flowerbeds line the paths throughout Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park\/Credit: Jim Osley, Geograph<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Head to the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park for an easy, inspiring stroll through a network of biodiverse habitats from curated gardens to wilder wetlands and meadows.\u00a0<\/p><p>Since opening for the 2012 Olympic Games, the park now includes 102 acres of managed green space around the River Lea and its canals including nearly 6,000 trees, over 120,000 flowers and plants, 6.5km of waterways, and designated landscaping for birds,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/wildlife\/mammals\/guide-to-britains-bats-species-facts-identification\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bats<\/a>, pollinators, and other\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/wildlife\/insects-invertebrates\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">insects<\/a>.<\/p><p>For self-directed walks there\u2019s an online series of mapped routes such as the nature-led\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/live-qeop.pantheonsite.io\/sites\/default\/files\/attachments\/QEOP_Biodiversity_Leaflet_WEB.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Parkland and Wildlife Trail<\/a>\u00a0(described below). Taking in fascinating Kew Palace, majestic Richmond Park and a veritable procession of kings and queens, if you can ignore the constant Heathrow traffic, you might almost expect to hear a royal hunting party galloping by.<\/p><p>This walk along the Thames Path from Kew Gardens to Richmond Park is one of the the very best routes in London, offering both city residents and tourist alike a chance to escape the bustle of the capital.<\/p><ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/go-outdoors\/walks\/kew-gardens-richmond-park-greater-london\">Kew Gardens and Richmond Park walk<\/a><\/li><\/ul><hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/><h3>Parkland Walk<\/h3><p><em><em>4.9 miles \/ 8km | 3.5 hours | moderate<\/em><\/em><\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1093\" height=\"724\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/47\/2023\/11\/Finsbury-Park.png\" alt=\"Finsbury Park trees\" class=\"wp-image-174080\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Parkland Walk begins in Finsbury Park\/Credit: Getty<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Trundling through trees in North London, tracing the course of an extinct Victorian-era railway line, the Parkland Walk is a traffic-free trek that can be explored in two parts, or done in one.\u00a0<\/p><p>The southern section detailed here chugs along London\u2019s longest linear nature reserve, a hidden (possibly haunted), wildlife-rich green corridor, stretching from Finsbury Park, around Crouch End to Highgate, passing ghost platforms and railway arches splattered with stunning street art.<\/p><p>A verdant link section through ancient woodlands leads to the northern half, which steams around Muswell Hill and climbs to the iconic antennae-topped broadcasting bastion of Alexandra Palace, delivering sensational views over London.\u00a0<\/p><ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/go-outdoors\/walks\/parkland-walk-london\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Parkland Walk<\/a><\/li><\/ul><hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/><h3>Wanstead Park<\/h3><p><em>3.3 miles \/ 5.2km | 2 hours | easy<\/em><\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1693\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/47\/2020\/02\/GettyImages-119107580-eff459f-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Heronry Pond in Wanstead Epping Forest\" class=\"wp-image-51722\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Heronry Pond in Wanstead is part of Epping Forest\/Credit: Getty<\/figcaption><\/figure><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/go-outdoors\/days-out\/wanstead-park-london\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wanstead Park<\/a> provided an al fresco lifeline to East London locals in recent lockdowns, thanks to 140 acres of roamable public space and a legacy of naturalistic features from its former incarnation as a stately home.\u00a0<\/p><p>Now managed by the City of London, there are walking trails, a system of five lakes, trees to climb, dens to make, an abundance of wildflowers and wildfowl and one of the most beautiful displays of native bluebells in or around the capital. Tea and ice cream are also served in an unpretentious caf\u00e9 near the park\u2019s historic Temple.<\/p><p>Walk or run the 3.25-mile Chestnut Trail through\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/go-outdoors\/days-out\/bike-ride-epping-forest-essex\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Epping Forest<\/a>\u00a0from a choice of entrances east and south of the park. Spot\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/wildlife\/birds\/guide-to-britains-herons-bitterns-and-cranes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">herons<\/a>\u00a0and egrets nesting on the Perch Pond and Ornamental Waters.<\/p><ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/wansteadpark.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/chestnut-trail.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wanstead Park walk<\/a><\/li><\/ul><hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/><h3>Wormwood Scrubs<\/h3><p><em>3.1 miles \/ 5km | 2 hours | easy | 74m ascent<\/em><\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"5010\" height=\"3375\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/47\/2022\/01\/Wormwood-Scrubs-e138f97-e1688023706870.jpg\" alt=\"A disused gasometer rises above trees and scrubland in Wormwood Scrubs park in west London\" class=\"wp-image-147976\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A disused gasometer rises above trees and scrubland in Wormwood Scrubs, West London\/Credit: Getty<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Deep within urban west London lies an oasis known as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/go-outdoors\/days-out\/visit-wormwood-scrubs-london\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wormwood Scrubs<\/a>. At first glance, the Scrubs, as it is affectionately known, may not look like the sort of place that would attract birdlife.<\/p><p>Covering 183 acres and surrounded by urbanity, it is an attractive park encircled by a thin band of woodland, dominated by sycamore, birch and plane. Over half the park\u2019s centre is taken up by sports fields. But there is a special magic about the place that is never more evident than in the spring. <\/p><ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.alltrails.com\/en-gb\/trail\/england\/london\/wormwood-scrubs-and-little-wormwood-circular\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wormwood Scrubs walk<\/a><\/li><\/ul><hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/><h3>WWT London Wetland Centre<\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"4000\" height=\"2670\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/47\/2023\/01\/London-Wetland-Centre-footpath-888394d-e1674040381573.jpg\" alt=\"London Wetland Centre footpath\" class=\"wp-image-134863\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">London Wetland Centre in summer\/Credit: Geograph<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/go-outdoors\/london-wetland-centre\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">London Wetland Centre<\/a>\u00a0is the embodiment of what you can achieve through urban rewilding. It is a remarkable achievement of naturalised landscaping featuring that all important giver of life \u2013 water.<\/p><p>It all began 25 years ago when the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/go-outdoors\/wildfowl-and-wetlands-trust-reserves\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust<\/a>\u00a0proposed to convert four square bland-looking redundant reservoir basins into a wetland wonderland for nature and people. All under the watchful eye of their founder; the late and definitely great Sir Peter Scott.<\/p><p>Situated on a north-facing bend of the Thames, the area has long attracted birds using the river to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/wildlife\/birds\/where-do-birds-go-in-winter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">migrate<\/a>\u00a0and in particular waterfowl and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/wildlife\/birds\/guide-to-wading-birds-britain\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">waders<\/a>\u00a0such as avocet and black-tailed godwits.<\/p><p>Also known locally as Barnes Wetlands, the site covers some 100 acres (40 hectares).
