The Cotswold village of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/go-outdoors\/walks\/castle-combe-wiltshire\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Castle Combe<\/a> \u2013 a living antique adrift in the Wiltshire countryside \u2013 is one of them. It looks no less exquisite today than it did when its weavers played their part in the medieval wool industry: think narrow lanes, a meandering brook, and storybook cottages with tile-stone roofs. The last new house? Built in the 1600s. In winter, Castle Combe&#8217;s charm is accentuated, and the surrounding valley with its gorgeous woodland become a magical playground.<\/p><h3 id=\"h-shaftesbury-dorset\">Shaftesbury, Dorset<\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-landscape_thumbnail\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"4665\" height=\"3102\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/47\/2021\/11\/Shaftesbury-Dorset-03ff24a-e1658145085324.jpg\" alt=\"Shaftesbury in snow\" class=\"wp-image-119302\" title=\"Shaftesbury in Dorset\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A famous English view &#8211; Gold Hill in Dorset, on a cold mid-winters day\/Credit: Getty<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>At 215 metres above sea level, this is one of the highest towns in England. Snow on the steep cobbles of Gold Hill increases the dramatic effect of the street, still remembered for 1973\u2019s romantic Hovis advert. The are lots of opportunities for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/go-outdoors\/walks\/best-walks-in-dorset\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">walking in Dorset<\/a>, and some 10 miles north of Shaftesbury are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationaltrust.org.uk\/stourhead\/features\/stourhead-winter-garden\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Stourhead<\/a>\u2019s spectacular winter gardens.<\/p><h3 id=\"h-bowness-on-windemere-lake-district\">Bowness-on-Windemere, Lake District<\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-landscape_thumbnail\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"2400\" height=\"1600\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/47\/2018\/12\/bowness-on-windermere-bc969ee.png\" alt=\"Boat and lake in winter\" class=\"wp-image-65814\" title=\"Bowness-on-Windermere, Cumbria\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The ferry at Bowness-on-Windermere in the Lake District\/Credit: Getty<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Fuel up on coffee and cake in the town of Bowness-on-Windermere then make for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/go-outdoors\/walks\/best-walks-in-the-lake-district\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cumbrian hills<\/a>. There&#8217;s plenty to explore within a few minutes of the town, including a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/go-outdoors\/walks\/walk-windermere-kennel-wood-cumbria\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">moderate-level walk to the Kennel Wood oak<\/a>, and a mini mountain climb from Hawkshead \u2013 another ice town \u2013 to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/go-outdoors\/walks\/walk-latrigg-cumbria\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">summit of Latrigg<\/a>.<\/p><h3 id=\"h-broadway-worcestershire\">Broadway, Worcestershire<\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-landscape_thumbnail\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"2139\" height=\"1402\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/47\/2009\/12\/GettyImages-182283547-c63fbb9.jpg\" alt=\"Snowy village\" class=\"wp-image-48792\" title=\"Broadway, Cotswolds in snow\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Broadway is a classic Cotswold village\/Credit: Getty<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The picturesque village of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/go-outdoors\/visit-broadway-places-to-stay-things-to-do\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Broadway<\/a>, with its warm, honey-hued cottages, is the perfect base for a wintry stroll. Take time to meander along the high street past pubs, caf\u00e9s, tea rooms and shops \u2013 offering art and antiques, country clothing and gifts \u2013 then head into the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/go-outdoors\/walks\/walk-broadway-worcestershire\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cotswold<\/a> hills.<\/p><h3 id=\"h-settle-yorkshire\">Settle, Yorkshire<\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-landscape_thumbnail\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1917\" height=\"1276\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/47\/2021\/11\/Settle-Yorkshire-ae18019.png\" alt=\"Settle in winter snow\" class=\"wp-image-119318\" title=\"Settle, Yorkshire\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Settle in winter snow\/Credit: Getty<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>From this small town in the south-west corner of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/go-outdoors\/walks\/best-walks-yorkshire-dales\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Yorkshire Dales<\/a> follow the icy waters of the River Ribble northwards for about two miles to the glorious waterfall of Stainforth Force. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitsettle.co.uk\/nakedman-food.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ye Olde Naked Man Caf\u00e9<\/a> is a firm favourite for a daytime snack. There are lots of options for walking in the area, including an 8.5-mile circular <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/go-outdoors\/walks\/settle-to-stainforth-yorkshire\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">walk from Settle to Stainforth<\/a>.<\/p><h3 id=\"h-beer-devon\">Beer, Devon<\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-landscape_thumbnail\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"5560\" height=\"3624\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/47\/2021\/11\/Beer-Devon-fc9e66c.jpg\" alt=\"Three fishing boats on the beach at Beer in Devon\" class=\"wp-image-150608\" title=\"Beer, Devon\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Watch fishing boats bob on the beach at Beer\/Credit: Getty<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The small village of Beer, sheltered by white chalky cliffs above a steep shingle beach, sits on the Jurassic Coast near Lyme Regis. Along this stretch of the Devon coastline, the rocks provide a haven for wildlife, even in winter, and it\u2019s a site of geological and historical interest, too.<\/p><p>Despite its popularity in the summer months, Beer is a peaceful spot in winter, somewhere to while away the hours watching fishing boats boat and and foaming waves crashing onto the beach. Nestled in a valley dominated by mountains it sits at the convergence of two rivers, the Glaslyn and Colwyn. Attractive bridges cross the water and lead to many captivating <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/go-outdoors\/walks\/best-walks-in-snowdonia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">walks in Snowdonia<\/a>. It\u2019s the county\u2019s largest and most vibrant settlement, where pretty townhouses rub shoulders with traditional pubs and vivacious caf\u00e9s.
