It&#8217;s impossible not to feel thrills down your spine at the epic scene of the train racing over the viaduct, through the spectacular hilly landscape. Fans will recognise the Warming Room as Professor Quirrell\u2019s classroom \u2013 a 500-year-old cauldron takes centre stage there now \u2013 and the Sacristy, where the intimidating Professor Snape teaches Potions in <em>Harry Potter and the Philosopher&#8217;s Stone<\/em>. This frosty, melancholic scene, featuring a beautiful wintry shot of the Wye, was filmed at Coppett Hill, a nature reserve near Goodrich. Founded in 678 by Prince Osric, the cathedral developed its palatial presence under the eye of its medieval abbot Serlo, who governed from 1072 to his death in 1104. <\/p><p>In <em>Harry Potter and the Philosopher&#8217;s Stone<\/em>, Gloucester&#8217;s South Corridor make its debut as the corridors of Hogwarts, as the young wizards are led into the school by Professor McGonagall after arriving on the Hogwarts Express. The East Corridor of the cathedral subsequently features when Moaning Myrtle floods the girls&#8217; bathroom in <em>Chamber of Secrets<\/em>, while the Lavatorium &#8211; the oldest in the world, dontcha know &#8211; is where Harry and Ron hide from the troll in the same film.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe title=\"Troll in the Bathroom | Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Ja0VzQNBxGo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">From Gloucester Cathedral&#8217;s Lavatorium, Harry and Ron watch the brutish troll walking past<\/figcaption><\/figure><hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/><h3><strong>Alnwick Castle,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/go-outdoors\/walks\/best-walks-in-northumberland-national-park\"> Northumberland<\/a><\/strong><\/h3><p>One of the largest inhabited castles in the UK, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alnwickcastle.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Alnwick Castle<\/a> stands in as Hogwarts during Harry\u2019s first broomstick lesson. Zoe Wanamaker leads the young cast in a flying tutorial at the Outer Bailey, which is also the site of Harry&#8217;s first Quidditch lesson in <em>Harry Potter and the Philosopher&#8217;s Stone<\/em>. Unsurprisingly, it makes scene-stealing several appearances in the Harry Potter films. <\/p><p>The Chapter House becomes the classroom setting for Professor McGonagall&#8217;s transfiguration lessons. The Cloisters stand in for corridors of Hogwarts, as the student wizards scurry between classes, and the memorable scene in which Dobby the house elf is freed was filmed on a set modelled almost identically on Durham Cathedral&#8217;s cloisters.<\/p><p>You&#8217;ll recognise the Cloister Garth \u2013 a quadrangle of grass \u2013 from the magical, snowy scene where Harry releases Hedwig the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/wildlife\/birds\/guide-to-britains-owl-species\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">owl<\/a> in <em>Harry Potter and the Sorceror&#8217;s Stone<\/em>, and as the spot where Ron Weasley, rather less charmingly, burps up slugs in <em>Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets<\/em>.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe title=\"Ron's Slug Spell Backfires | Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/nbxnO-Drp1E?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.durhamcathedral.co.uk\/\">Durham Cathedral<\/a> is open Monday to Saturday 10am &#8211; 4pm and Sundays 12noon &#8211; 4pm.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/><h3>Freshwater West beach, Pembrokeshire<\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/47\/2020\/03\/Freshwater-West-Pembrokeshire-021f174-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Freshwater West Beach Pembrokeshire was where Harry Potter was filmed\" class=\"wp-image-53648\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Freshwater West in Pembrokeshire.\/ Credit: Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>One of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/go-outdoors\/walks\/best-hikes-in-wales\">Wales<\/a>\u2019 top surfing spots, Freshwater West in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/go-outdoors\/walks\/best-hikes-in-pembrokeshire\">Pembrokeshire<\/a> features in both of the final Harry Potter films. The safe house Shell Cottage was built here, with a roof made of large scallop shells, and dear Dobby the house-elf is buried on these shores in <em>Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I<\/em>. Hagrid&#8217;s Hut, a fairytale shack complete with pumpkin patch and smoking chimney, was built at Clachaig Gully for three Harry Potter films. <\/p><p>In <em>Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban<\/em>, the landscape appears to dramatic effect in the scene in which the Golden Trio rescue Buckbeak. Hagrid&#8217;s Hut also appears in <em>Order of the Phoenix<\/em>, before Harry meets the thestrals and when Umbridge fires Hagrid, and in <em>The<\/em> <em>Half-Blood Prince<\/em>, as Harry and Hagrid bid farewell to Aragog. You know, in <em>Harry Potter and the Deathy Hallows Part 2<\/em>? That&#8217;s Loch Arkaig, with its beautiful <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/wildlife\/trees-plants\/scots-pine-facts\">Scots pine forest.<\/a> Not a bad place to land. This huge limestone amphitheatre of vertical cliff, reaching 80 metres in height, is topped by a spectacular limestone pavement &#8211; 300 metres of cobbled white slabs stretching towards the vertical drop. The crew visited in 2010 but, surprisingly, the cast never filmed here &#8211; the footage from Lavenham was blended with studio-recorded performances through the magic of CGI.
