And it\u2019s easy to imagine fairies inhabiting the vibrant turquoise pools near Glen Brittle, at the foot of the Black Cuillin mountains. <\/p><p>Find out more about the myth and legend of Fairy Pools, as well as how to get there, walking trails and swimming.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-landscape_thumbnail\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Loch na Cuilce and Loch Coruisk with Black Cuillins in background\/Credit: Getty<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The crystal-clear, water-carved Fairy Pools are fed \u2013 and ceaselessly enlarged \u2013 by a string of small waterfalls on a burn that drains one of the Cuillin\u2019s vast ice-flattened corries. <\/p><p>Britain\u2019s finest and most formidable mountain scenery forms a backdrop to the pools, where the Black Cuillin ridge extends serpent-like for some seven miles.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-are-the-fairy-pools-called-the-fairy-pools\">Why are the Fairy pools called the Fairy pools?<\/h2><p>The legend goes that a local Clan MacLeod chief of old married a fairy princess, giving rise to many fairy place names on the Isle of Skye. <\/p><p>It is also said that Fairy Pools attracted selkies. These mythological creatures, disguised as large seals during the day, would come to the beach at the foot of Glen Brittle where they would shed their skins and change into human form for the night, to bathe in the pools under the light of a full moon.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-where-are-the-fairy-pools\">Where are the Fairy Pools?<\/h2><p>The Fairy Pools are located on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/search?phrase=isle of skye\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Isle of Skye<\/a> in Scotland, near the village of Carbost.<\/p><p>To visit Fairy Pools, assuming you are not coming ashore as a selkie, make your way along the enchanting single-track road that runs down Glen Brittle, east of Carbost. <\/p><p>From the Glumagan Na Sithichean car park, follow the path on the opposite side of the road towards the burn, known as Allt Coir\u2019 a\u2019 Mhadaidh. <\/p><p>Ignore an early fork to the left and continue strenuously uphill on the footpath as it runs alongside the lively burn for 1.5 miles (2.4km).<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-landscape_thumbnail\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/47\/2020\/01\/GettyImages-531564245-bb16434-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Waterfalls and mountains\" class=\"wp-image-51245\" title=\"Fairy Pools on the Isle of Skye, Scotland\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">On a sunny day, the pools\u2019 bright greens and blues are at their very best\/Credit: Getty &#8211; Getty<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>A dip in Fairy Pools is extremely refreshing, if a bit chilly, even in the summer months. <\/p><p>On a sunny day, the pools\u2019 bright greens and blues are at their very best, lit up to create a magical realm. An underwater arch graces one pool, while higher up, the pyramidal pinnacle of Sg\u00f9rr an Fheadain draws the eye.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How many Fairy Pools are there?<\/h2><p>The number of distinct pools can vary depending on water levels and how one defines individual pools. <\/p><p>The area features multiple pools of varying sizes, connected by flowing water and surrounded by scenic landscapes.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Useful Information<\/h3><ul><li>Access to the Fairy Pools is free, and there is a car park available. However, it can get busy during the summer months so it&#8217;s worth getting there early to secure a space.<\/li><li>Check the weather forecast before heading to the Fairy Pools &#8211; Scotland is known for its unpredictable weather, and the Isle of Skye is no exception. Keep in mind that conditions can change rapidly so be prepared for rain, wind, and sudden changes in weather. Layers are best, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/search?phrase=waterproof\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow\">waterproof clothing<\/a> may be necessary.<\/li><li>The walk to the Fairy Pools involves some uneven and rocky terrain.
