Where is Lochleven Castle?<\/h2>

Lochleven Castle is situated on an island in Loch Leven, near the town of Kinross in central Scotland, approximately 13 miles (21k) northeast of Stirling and about 20 miles (32k) southwest of Perth.<\/p>

When was Lochleven Castle built?<\/h2>

Lochleven Castle’s construction dates back to the 14th century. The exact year of its construction is not precise, but it is believed to have been built in the early to mid-1300s.<\/p>

What to see and do at Lochleven Castle<\/h2>

Now a charming ruin, Lochleven Castle once played a significant role in history as the place where Mary, Queen of Scots was held captive for nearly a year after her forces lost the Battle of Carberry Hill. That was until one devoted supporter \u2013 the lovestruck George Douglas, son of the castle owner \u2013 arranged for her to make a daring escape.\u00a0<\/p>

This was harder than than it may sound because the fortress happens to be on a tiny island on Loch Leven. The thrilling plan involved spiriting away a set of cell keys from a dinner table, rowing a boat across the loch under the cover of darkness, and riding a horse away to freedom from the southern shore.<\/p>

It was to be the castle\u2019s final brush with history and it was abandoned soon afterwards. Nowadays, a tiny (powered) boat will ferry you across to the island from Kinross. <\/p>

Loch Leven is a National Nature Reserve renowned for its bird population and, if you visit in the autumn (the castle is open from mid-May to October), you have a very good chance of seeing flocks of pink-footed geese.<\/p>
