For Queen Victoria, Osborne House was more than a summer home. Designed by architect Thomas Cubitt under Prince Albert’s direction, this palatial Italianate villa was a place where family life and royal entertainment duties could co-exist.

After the death of Albert in 1861, it also served as a welcome retreat. Queen Victoria herself died at Osborne House in 1901.

Who owns Osborne House?

Today, Osborne House is managed by English Heritage. Visitors can enjoy the state and family rooms, explore the gardens, stroll on the beach, and delight in the Swiss Cottage. For the family, there are two playgrounds and a garden adventure trail, as well a choice of eateries.

What to see at Osborne House

In addition to visiting the house, with state rooms filled with ornate furniture and art from the Royal Collection, stroll through terraced gardens and extensive grounds, explore the charming museum inside the Swiss Cottage, and unwind on the beach where the royal children once learned to swim.

Perhaps the best views of Osborne House are from the Solent itself. Standing proudly at the top of a sloping valley amid 323 hectares of parkland, terraces and gardens, and with its own beach, this is a holiday home fit for royalty.

Where to eat near Osborne House

The Lifeboat: Great bar and restaurant overlooking East Cowes Marina.

Burrs: Popular restaurant if you’re heading back into Newport.

Smoking Lobster: Asian menu specialising in freshly line-caught fish on Cowes Harbour.

Where to stay near Osborne House

For self-catering holiday cottages, check out The National Trust, or, for hotels in the area try Booking.com, TripAdvisor or Expedia.

How to get to the Isle of Wight

The most common way to reach the Isle of Wight is by ferry.
