Credit Phillip Horwood<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>While hedgehog populations in urban areas are recovering after decades of decline, numbers in country areas have dropped by between 30% and 75% since 2000, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britishhedgehogs.org.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">British Hedgehog Preservation Society<\/a> (BHPS).<\/p><p>The new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britishhedgehogs.org.uk\/national-hedgehog-monitoring-programme\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Hedgehog Monitoring Programme<\/a>, led by the BHPS and the <a href=\"https:\/\/ptes.org\/campaigns\/hedgehogs\/nhmp\/#:~:text=The NHMP is an exciting,produce robust hedgehog population estimates.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">People\u2019s Trust for Endangered Species<\/a>, will use trail cameras to gather data on hedgehogs at sites including parks, gardens, woodlands and farmland.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video controls=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/47\/2024\/03\/night-hog-falls-in-pond.-Credit-Yvonne-Best-for-Hedgehog-Street.mp4\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Two hedgehogs are caught on camera falling into a pond. In the next three years 40 sites will be covered by more than 1,000 cameras, each one taking a picture every time its sensors detects movement.<\/p><p>The huge number of images means a special AI algorithm, developed at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ljmu.ac.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Liverpool John Moores University<\/a>, will be used to take out any that don\u2019t have wildlife in them.<\/p><p>That will still leave thousands of pictures needing to be sorted by eye \u2013 which is why the project is appealing for volunteers.\u00a0<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1575\" height=\"1050\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/47\/2024\/03\/Demonstrating-camera-set-up-in-Durham-for-the-National-Hedgehog-Monitoring-Programme.jpg\" alt=\"Demonstrating camera set up in Durham for the National Hedgehog Monitoring Programme\" class=\"wp-image-181357\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Demonstrating camera set up in Durham for the National Hedgehog Monitoring Programme. Credit the National Hedgehog Monitoring Programme<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>It\u2019s hoped as many volunteers as possible will join in, working online on citizen science platform <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mammalweb.org\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MammalWeb<\/a> from anywhere in the UK or even abroad, to find the snaps of hedgehogs.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>The data generated will then be used to develop a robust estimate of how many hedgehogs there are in the UK, and how populations change annually. It means experts can work out just which places and habitats are best and worst for hedgehogs, and even what might be causing declines.<\/p><p>The existing 13 camera sites are spread across Britain, from Dorset to Glasgow. The NHMP team and a pilot group of volunteers are currently sorting the mass of images taken from them in 2023. Hedgehogs have been spotted at six sites so far \u2013 along with many other species, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/wildlife\/birds\/guide-to-britains-owl-species\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tawny owls<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/wildlife\/mammals\/guide-to-britains-mustelids-what-are-they-how-to-identify-and-where-do-they-live\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">stoats<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/wildlife\/mammals\/red-squirrel-guide-how-to-identify-and-where-to-see-in-britain\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">red squirrels<\/a>.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video controls=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/47\/2024\/03\/Hedgehog-using-Hedgehog-Highway.-Credit-Helen-Wheeler.mp4\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">You can help hedgehogs by putting a &#8216;Hedgehog Highway&#8217; in your garden. Credit Helen Wheeler<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Dr Henrietta Pringle, National Hedgehog Monitoring Programme Coordinator at the People\u2019s Trust for Endangered Species, said the first use of AI for a hedgehog conservation project would help produce the first reliable nationwide survey.\u00a0<\/p><p>\u201cBefore we can put practical conservation measures in place we need to understand where they are and why they\u2019re declining,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/p><p>\u201cThis is the first study where populations are measured year after year, in the same location, which will produce vital data and allow us to identify those at risk, which in time will hopefully help us to reverse the decline.<\/p><p>\u201cThe results will also allow us to see regional and habitat differences, and identify what factors impact them in different places, which will not only be fascinating but also incredibly useful for their long-term conservation.\u201d<\/p><p>She has been joining in with the photo analysis, and added:\u00a0 \u201cSwiping through the images on MammalWeb becomes addictive \u2013 you get a real buzz when you spot a hedgehog.\u00a0<\/p><p>\u201cWe often share photos in the office of the species we\u2019ve spotted and even have a leader board now too \u2013 once you start, it\u2019s very hard to stop!\u201d<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video controls=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/47\/2024\/03\/Hedgehog-scratching-then-falling-over.-Credit-Melissa-Harding.avi\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Hedgehog enjoying a scratch so much that it falls over.
