Named after a fictional character in\u00a0Sir Walter Scott&#8217;s novel, <em>Guy Mannering<\/em>, the breed has a long and intriguing history to match its charm.<\/p><p>But sadly the Dandie Dinmont is a breed at risk, with just 102 puppies born and registered in the UK in 2023.<\/p><p>We spoke to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thekennelclub.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Kennel Club<\/a>\u00a0to find out more about the iconic Scottish dog, from its fascinating history and famous owners to what&#8217;s being done to save the breed.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A vulnerable breed: Just 102 Dandie Dinmont terrier puppies were registered in the UK in 2023. The breed came to prominence in 1815, following the publication of <em>Guy Mannering<\/em>, a novel by Sir Walter Scott, featuring a farmer called Dandie Dinmont. <\/p><p>Following publication, many readers flocked to the Scottish Borders to find \u201cDandie Dinmont\u2019s terriers\u201d and, as such, the breed acquired its iconic name.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"731\" height=\"478\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/47\/2024\/04\/Dandie-Dinmont-illustration.jpg\" alt=\"Old engraved illustration of the Dandie Dinmont terrier\" class=\"wp-image-181895\" style=\"width:837px;height:auto\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Dandie Dinmont terriers were originally bred to hunt vermin. Credit: Getty<\/figcaption><\/figure><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A forgotten breed<\/h2><p>Sadly, owing to the breed\u2019s low annual registration numbers \u2013 with just 102 puppies born and registered in 2023 \u2013\u00a0the Dandie Dinmont is currently classed by The Kennel Club as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thekennelclub.org.uk\/getting-a-dog\/are-you-ready\/vulnerable-native-breeds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">vulnerable breed<\/a>, which monitors breeds that register less than 300 puppies a year.<\/p><p>\u201cThere are more than 200 dog breeds in this country, each with different personalities, characteristics and needs, and yet people are increasingly opting for the fashionable or obvious choices,&#8221; says Bill Lambert, Health and Welfare Manager at The Kennel Club.<\/p><p>\u201cThe Dandie Dinmont terrier is one of our most historic breeds, but you rarely see one now in our streets and parks.
