Owing to both their energy levels and their bigger size, they need more than two hours of exercise every day.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">History<\/h3><p>Much like the other setter breeds, the Irish red and white setter was traditionally used by falconers to help locate game. <\/p><p>These days they are more likely to be a loving family pet, however, due to their low annual registration numbers \u2013 just 46 puppies were born and registered in 2023 \u2013\u00a0\u00a0the breed is currently classed by The Kennel Club as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thekennelclub.org.uk\/getting-a-dog\/are-you-ready\/vulnerable-native-breeds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">vulnerable breed<\/a>, which monitors breeds that register less than 300 puppies a year.\u00a0<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"712\" height=\"490\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/47\/2024\/04\/Irish-red-and-white-setter-dog-2.jpg\" alt=\"Irish red and white setter dog\" class=\"wp-image-182008\" style=\"width:841px;height:auto\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Irish red and white setters are known for their intelligence, high energy and affectionate nature. Their size and energy means they will be happiest with active owners who have access to a large garden, and\/or open land. Credit: Getty<\/figcaption><\/figure><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Surprising fact<\/h3><p>You may be familiar with the Irish setter, but this breed was the &#8216;original&#8217; Irish setter. Falconers preferred the Irish red and white setter because its colours made it easier to spot from afar, but the later popularity of the Irish setter in the early 20<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0century saw the numbers for the older breed dwindle.<\/p><ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/animals\/pets\/cocker-spaniel-dog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cocker spaniel: Characteristics, photos and facts<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/animals\/pets\/dandie-dinmont-terrier-dog-breed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dandie Dinmont terrier: The super rare dog with tiny legs, a topknot and its own Scottish tartan<\/a><\/li><\/ul><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A vulnerable breed<\/h3><p>\u201cThe UK has an amazing and diverse variety of dog breeds, with 222 currently recognised by The Kennel Club,&#8221; says Bill Lambert, spokesperson for The Kennel Club.<\/p><p>\u201cBut while some breeds, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/animals\/pets\/labrador-retriever-dog-breed\">labradors <\/a>and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/animals\/pets\/cocker-spaniel-dog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cocker spaniels<\/a>, are well-known and popular, there are many less-known native dog breeds that sadly are seeing their population numbers dwindle despite their lovable characters and interesting origins.<\/p><p>\u201cOur \u2018Save Forgotten Dog Breeds\u2019 campaign\u00a0\u2013\u00a0\u00a0which includes a competition for at-risk breeds and a meet and greet zone at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/animals\/pets\/crufts-2024-everything-you-need-to-know-about-the-largest-dog-show-in-the-world\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Crufts<\/a>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0aims to remind people about the diverse breeds of dog we\u2019re lucky to have, including those historic native dogs that are at risk of disappearing, and their different personalities and needs, suited to different people and lifestyles.&#8221;<\/p><p>Further information can be found on The Kennel Club\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thekennelclub.org.uk\/getting-a-dog\/are-you-ready\/vulnerable-native-breeds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Vulnerable Native Breed list<\/a>.
