Credit: Getty<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Despite the name, the Australian shepherd breed was developed in California in the 19th century, partly from Spanish mountain dogs, but also from collies shipped from Australia and New Zealand. They were prized for herding <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/wildlife\/mammals\/native-british-cattle-breeds-and-how-to-recognise-them\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cattle<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/news\/bison-uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bison<\/a>.<\/p><p>They have ears softer than a chinchilla\u2019s tum, beautiful black, grey and white coats (known in the biz as blue merle), sometimes with a touch of copper trim, and lovely thick fur. One in five are born with stumpy tails. Walking around your neighbourhood, your Aussie shepherd will be showered with compliments that will make your heart swell preposterously with pride.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-much-exercise-does-an-australian-shepeherd-need\">How much exercise does an Australian shepeherd need?<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/47\/2024\/05\/australian_shepherd.jpg\" alt=\"australian shepherd aussie\" class=\"wp-image-183869\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Aussie shepherds are energetic dogs. Credit: Getty<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>My Australian shepherd, Dakota, gets three walks a day (a minimum of two hours\u2019 exercise) that ideally includes racing around off the lead with other dogs, plus time in our dog-proof garden. <\/p><p>She can\u2019t be let loose around <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/wildlife\/wildlife-stories\/dog-attacks-on-livestock-how-bad-is-the-problem-and-what-are-the-possible-solutions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">livestock<\/a> (more training required) and will chase <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/wildlife\/mammals\/british-deer-guide\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">deer<\/a>, pheasants and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/wildlife\/mammals\/red-squirrel-guide-how-to-identify-and-where-to-see-in-britain\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">squirrels<\/a> \u2013 in vain.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-are-australian-shepherds-easy-to-train\">Are Australian Shepherds easy to train?<\/h2><p>With proper socialisation and training, Aussie Shepherds can excel in various canine sports and activities, including obedience, agility, herding trials, and even search and rescue work.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video controls=\"\" poster=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/47\/2024\/05\/Image-01-05-2024-at-11.48.jpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/47\/2024\/05\/GettyImages-1455036535.mp4\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Though Aussie Shepherds are intellegient and earger learners, sometimes you just need a helping paw. Credit: Getty<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><p>In fact, Viking, a three-year-old Australian Shepherd from Solihull, Birmingham, and co-owned by Melanie Raymond, John Shaw and Kerry Kirtley, claimed the <em>Pastoral Group<\/em> title at <a href=\"https:\/\/crufts.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Crufts<\/a> 2024 and went on to be crowned <em>Best in Show<\/em>. The second of its breed to earn the title of <em>Best in Show<\/em>, he beat 24,000 dogs from around the world to claim the show\u2019s top honour.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Gorgeous Australian Shepherd Viking Wins Best In Show at Crufts 2024\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/w84FfNXqOes?start=27&amp;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Melanie Raymond said about her dog, Viking, &#8220;he always gives me everything and you come in and he&#8217;s like &#8216;yep, come on let&#8217;s do this'&#8221;.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-do-australian-shepherds-make-good-pets\">Do Australian Shepherds make good pets?<\/h2><p>The words energetic, lively and sociable all spring to mind. As does bumptious. They are medium-sized, like a standard <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/animals\/pets\/labrador-retriever-dog-breed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">labrador<\/a>, weighing up to about 25kg, and adore cold weather and paddling in streams.
