id=\"h-how-do-owls-twist-their-heads-so-far-round\">How do owls twist their heads so far round?<\/h2><p>All birds have very mobile heads, partly to aid preening, feeding and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/birds\/how-do-birds-fly\">flight<\/a>, and partly to compensate for the fact that their eyes are fixed in their sockets (making it difficult for birds to glance around them).<\/p><ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/animal-vision-how-do-animals-see\">Animal vision: how do animals see?<\/a><\/li><\/ul><p>Birds have 11\u201325 neck (cervical) vertebrae compared with just 7 in most mammals, including humans.<\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/wildlife\/birds\/guide-to-britains-owl-species\">Owls <\/a>take this flexibility to extremes: they can rotate their heads up to 270 degrees and twist them nearly upside-down.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video controls=\"\" contortions bursting blood vessels or cutting off the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/blood-facts\"> blood<\/a> supply to the brain, the arteries in an owl\u2019s neck \u2013 which sit inside tubes within the hollow bones \u2013 are cushioned by air sacs.<\/p><p>Other arteries at the base of the skull can dilate to store blood, so if the flow is interrupted lower
