All you need to know about the first eight weeks."},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\">All you need to know about the first 8 weeks of a kitten&#8217;s life <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By <\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Wednesday, 08 May 2024 at 15:25 PM<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p><strong>They\u2019re playful, inquisitive, and undeniably cute, but there\u2019s more to kittens than\u00a0just\u00a0fluff and fun. <\/strong><\/p><p>As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cats.org.uk\/\">Cats Protection<\/a> Central Veterinary Officer Sarah Elliott explains,\u00a0a kitten\u2019s first few weeks\u00a0are packed with important developmental milestones\u00a0which\u00a0will influence their entire lives.\u00a0<\/p><ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/animals\/pets\/how-can-i-stop-my-cat-hunting-wildlife\">How can I stop my cat hunting wildlife?<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/news\/why-do-cats-purr\">Why do cats purr?<\/a><\/li><li\/><\/ul><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-many-kittens-can-a-cat-have\">How many kittens can a cat have?<\/h2><p>After a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/animals\/pets\/how-long-are-cats-pregnant\">pregnancy of around nine weeks<\/a>, a female cat will give birth to a litter containing anything from one to nine kittens \u2013\u00a0most commonly four to six.\u00a0<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-when-do-kittens-start-to-suckle\">When do kittens start to suckle?<\/h2><p>Healthy kittens should start to suckle almost immediately,\u00a0and it\u2019s important they\u00a0take in the \u2018first milk\u2019 \u2013 known as colostrum \u2013 as this contains vital\u00a0antibodies to help fight disease. <\/p><p>Newborn kittens are vulnerable to cold, so they\u00a0will\u00a0keep\u00a0warm by snuggling closely to their mum and litter mates.\u00a0<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-when-do-kittens-open-their-eyes\">When do kittens open their eyes? <\/h2><p>Their\u00a0eyes will remain tightly closed until they\u2019re around ten days old. <\/p><p>All kittens start off with blue-grey eyes.\u00a0<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-often-should-kittens-be-feeding\">How often should kittens be feeding?<\/h2><p>By week two,\u00a0healthy\u00a0kittens should be feeding well \u2013 about every two hours \u2013 and will be\u00a0growing fast.\u00a0From an ideal initial weight of between 90g-110g, kittens should gain around 10-15g a day, doubling their\u00a0birth weight by two weeks old. <\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-when-can-kittens-socialise\">When can kittens socialise?<\/h2><p>Two weeks is a particularly important milestone as it marks the start of the \u2018socialisation\u00a0period\u2019 that runs until kittens are around\u00a0seven\u00a0weeks old<strong>.\u00a0<\/strong>It\u2019s during this time that kittens will learn what is normal\u00a0and is vital to them becoming confident\u00a0pets.<\/p><p>If kittens have lots of positive experiences with\u00a0different\u00a0people, sights, sounds,\u00a0and other animals, they\u2019re\u00a0likely to thrive in a domestic home. <\/p><p>On the\u00a0flip side, they\u2019ll grow up to be scared of anything they\u00a0didn\u2019t come across, or which was a bad experience, during\u00a0these early weeks.\u00a0Kittens that have been born to feral or stray mums \u2013 and have had no positive human interactions during this socialisation period \u2013 will grow up to be feral and\u00a0cannot be tamed in later life.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-when-do-kittens-start-walking\">When do kittens start walking?<\/h2><p>After starting to crawl, at around 14 days, kittens should be able to walk at three weeks old. <\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-when-do-kittens-stop-drinking-milk-from-their-mothers\">When do kittens stop drinking milk from their mothers?<\/h2><p>As kittens start to walk they\u2019ll be getting stronger and all that growing means\u00a0they\u2019ll still need lots of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/what-is-sleep\">sleep<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p><p>As energy levels\u00a0increase, they\u2019ll soon be ready to start weaning onto solid food. It\u2019s a gradual process which will take a few weeks,\u00a0and kittens will still need\u00a0their mother\u2019s milk for a few more weeks.\u00a0<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-when-do-kittens-start-to-play-nbsp\">When do kittens start to play?<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video controls=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/47\/2024\/05\/GettyImages-1088-92.mp4\"\/><\/figure><p>Now the fun really begins! It\u2019s around four weeks old that kittens will start to play with their litter mates.\u00a0Over the next few weeks, they\u2019ll begin to \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/mammals\/why-do-cats-pounce\">pounce<\/a>,\u00a0hide\u00a0and stalk each other, and\u00a0all this teaches them the hunting skills that they\u2019d rely on if they were living in the wild. <\/p><ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/animals\/pets\/how-wild-is-your-cat\">How wild is your cat? 5 behaviours that reveal your cat&#8217;s secret wild side.<\/a><\/li><\/ul><p>Look closely and you\u2019ll see how much their play resembles <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/mammals\/why-can-only-big-cats-roar\">big cats<\/a> like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/mammals\/facts-about-lions\">lions<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/mammals\/facts-about-tigers\">tigers<\/a>\u00a0hunting\u00a0their prey.\u00a0You can help with socialisation by gently joining in play \u2013 but remember, the games you play now will\u00a0stay with a kitten into adulthood.\u00a0So\u00a0it\u2019s important that you don\u2019t\u00a0encourage\u00a0kittens to scratch and bite during a game,\u00a0as\u00a0they\u2019ll continue to do so as adults when their aim will be better and their teeth and claws sharper.\u00a0<\/p><p>Here are some ideas for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/mammals\/6-key-behaviours-that-reveal-the-wild-ancestry-of-your-cat\">homemade cat toys\u00a0<\/a>that will entertain felines for hours<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-when-do-kittens-start-using-a-litter-tray\">When do kittens start using a litter tray?<\/h2><p>At around five weeks\u2019 old, kittens will start\u00a0to learn\u00a0more important\u00a0life skills, like grooming themselves and using a litter tray. It\u2019s tiring work, so they\u2019ll still need to sleep\u00a0between 16 and 20 hours a day, which will give their immune system a boost and the energy they need to grow.\u00a0<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-when-can-you-worm-kittens\">When can you worm kittens?<\/h2><p>Kittens will be ready for their first worming\u00a0treatment at around five weeks too,\u00a0and\u00a0they can be given their first taste of independence by spending short periods of time away from their mum.\u00a0<\/p><p>As the socialisation period will soon be coming to an end, it\u2019s important for kittens to\u00a0continue to\u00a0have plenty of positive experiences with people.\u00a0Gentle handling, grooming with a brush\u00a0and exposing kittens to household sounds like the vacuum and washing machine\u00a0are great for socialisation. <\/p><p>The Cats Protection have put together a downloadable <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cats.org.uk\/help-and-advice\/pregnancy-and-kitten-care\/kitten-socialisation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">list of sounds to play to your kitten<\/a> to help them get used to common noises like thunder, fireworks and a vacuum cleaner.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-happens-to-kittens-when-they-are-six-weeks-old\">What happens to kittens when they are six weeks old?<\/h2><p>Kittens will now have developed their own characteristics, with some being bolder and others more reserved.\u00a0They\u2019ll continue to learn lots of new skills through play and\u00a0will\u00a0get a taste of independence\u00a0as their mum begins to spend less time with them.\u00a0<\/p><p>But remember &#8211;\u00a0however confident they may appear, it\u2019s vital\u00a0for their health and development\u00a0that kittens remain\u00a0living with their mum for now. \u00a0While she may be enjoying a bit of \u2018me time\u2019 herself, she\u2019ll still be keeping a close\u00a0eye\u00a0and the kittens will\u00a0need to be with her overnight.\u00a0<\/p><p>Another exciting development is the appearance of their \u2018true\u2019 eye colour around this time. Due to a lack of pigment in the iris at birth, all kittens will have blue eyes until they\u2019re around six weeks old, when the pigment called melanin will\u00a0develop enough to prompt a colour change.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-when-should-kittens-get-their-first-vaccinations-and-flea-treatments\">When should kittens get their first vaccinations and flea treatments?<\/h2><p>By week seven, the kittens\u00a0are getting\u00a0ready to be parted from their mum.
