Its spores\u00a0are present in our day-to-day environments,\u00a0but most commonly thrive in soils, rusty contaminated\u00a0tools,\u00a0as well as\u00a0human and animal faeces.\u00a0<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-who-is-most-at-risk-of-developing-an-infection\">Who is most at risk of developing an infection?<\/h2><p>Tetanus infections are a worldwide risk, with those in\u00a0least\u00a0developed\u00a0counties\u00a0most\u00a0at risk. This is\u00a0due to poor standards in\u00a0hygiene and waste management, as well as limited or lacking access to healthcare.\u00a0<\/p><p>Also people who live or work in the countryside or have animals should always make sure they are up-to-date with their vaccinations<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-do-you-contract-tetanus\">How do you contract tetanus?<\/h2><p>As with all bacterial infections Clostridium Tetani needs a route into the body and\u00a0infections usually find their way in through\u00a0a\u00a0break in our skin, wounds or burns. <\/p><p>Wounds either caused by a contaminated object, such as a rusty\u00a0garden\u00a0fork, or\u00a0wounds and burns\u00a0that are existing\u00a0and open\u00a0that are\u00a0exposed to contaminants like soil,\u00a0are particularly susceptible to developing a tetanus infection.\u00a0<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-tetanus-vaccination-programme\">Tetanus vaccination programme<\/h2><p>Within the United Kingdom,\u00a0all\u00a0persons\u00a0are eligible to receive the tetanus vaccine, as part of the childhood vaccination programme.<\/p><p>Since 1961\u00a0the tetanus vaccine\u00a0has been\u00a0a part\u00a0of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/vaccinations\/nhs-vaccinations-and-when-to-have-them\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">childhood vaccination programme<\/a>, and those who conformed\u00a0to\u00a0the programme\u00a0after\u00a0this date\u00a0will\u00a0have\u00a0had\u00a0three tetanus vaccines\u00a0(priming course)\u00a0by six months of age,\u00a0administered\u00a0within the 6-in-1 vaccine.\u00a0<\/p><p>A fourth is given, in the form of a 4-in-1 \u2018pre-school\u2019 booster when the child is 3 years old.\u00a0A fifth\u00a0is given, in the form of a 3-in-1 booster in the child&#8217;s teenage years, often\u00a0between\u00a013-15 years.\u00a0<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-many-tetanus-vaccinations-do-i-need\">How many tetanus vaccinations do I need?<\/h2><p>A full tetanus vaccination history is defined\u00a0as\u00a0five tetanus vaccines.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-often-do-i-need-tetanus-boosters\">How often do I need tetanus boosters?<\/h2><p>Booster shots are recommended\u00a0every 10 years. If you are unsure\u00a0of your vaccination status,\u00a0review of your records via the NHS App, or discus with your GP.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-when-may-i-need-an-extra-tetanus-shot\">When may I need an extra tetanus shot?<\/h2><p>When you have an injury, such as a wound or burn, you may receive a booster dose of tetanus vaccine if there is a high risk of tetanus infection developing.\u00a0<\/p><p>However, if a tetanus infection is suspected then\u00a0the person may also be administered Human Tetanus Immunoglobulin, a specific medication that introduces tetanus antibodies straight way, so you can a fight tetanus infection straight away without the immune system getting into gear.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-wounds-require-a-tetanus-shot\">What wounds require a tetanus shot?<\/h2><p>Medical providers have access to a range of guidelines that\u00a0indicate\u00a0when\u00a0persons should be provided a tetanus\u00a0vaccination, or\u00a0Human Tetanus Immunoglobulin.<\/p><p>These\u00a0guidelines\u00a0are complex and depend on a variety of factors. Often patients are seriously injured and\/or unwell\u00a0and seek treatment for their injury and\/or illness, rather than\u00a0the\u00a0specific concern of tetanus.<\/p><p>For those who sustain minor injuries, of which they can manage themselves, but are\u00a0unsure if they should seek medical\u00a0assistance\u00a0due to the concern of tetanus,\u00a0the below is general guidance.<\/p><p><strong>Clean Wounds:<\/strong> <\/p><p>Superficial wounds,\u00a0defined as\u00a0those with minimal damage to the skin, where there has not been deep penetration into the skin\u00a0or\u00a0underlying\u00a0tissue,\u00a0and\u00a0have been\u00a0thoroughly\u00a0cleaned\u00a0and covered\u00a0with a dressing\u00a0within six hours\u00a0of injury,\u00a0have a low likelihood of developing\u00a0a\u00a0tetanus infection.<br\/><br\/>Therefore, tetanus boosters are not\u00a0indicated, unless the person\u00a0never received a priming course of tetanus vaccine.<\/p><p><strong>Tetanus Prone<\/strong>: <\/p><p>Wounds that are tetanus prone, and therefore have a risk of developing infection include:<\/p><ul><li>Puncture wounds, from often, contaminated equipment such as gardening, or industrial tools.<\/li><li>Foreign bodies within\u00a0the\u00a0wound.<\/li><li>Wounds or burns that\u00a0go on to develop infections*<\/li><li>Some animal bites and\u00a0scratches (<em>see superficial bites and scratches below<\/em>)<\/li><\/ul><p><strong>Superficial\u00a0bites\u00a0or scratches<\/strong>: <\/p><p>This means<em>\u00a0<\/em>those that\u00a0have caused\u00a0minimal damage\u00a0to the skin,\u00a0are not deep\u00a0or\u00a0penetrating,\u00a0and\u00a0do not bleed freely,\u00a0that\u00a0have\u00a0been\u00a0cleaned well,\u00a0are less likely to develop a tetanus infection. <\/p><p>However superficial bites and scratches from &#8216;working\u00a0animals\u2019, such as farm dogs &amp; cats,\u00a0are at higher risk of developing\u00a0a tetanus\u00a0infection,\u00a0due to their\u00a0environment,\u00a0where the animal may be rooting in soil\u00a0or\u00a0mixing with various animals and their faeces (manure).<\/p><p>These injuries often require assessment and treatment from a medical provider\u00a0regardless of tetanus risk. <\/p><p>Assessment will include consideration of\u00a0tetanus\u00a0risk, and\u00a0booster\u00a0vaccines\u00a0will be considered. Often\u00a0if the person injured is vaccinated within the last ten\u00a0years,\u00a0then\u00a0a booster is not\u00a0required. <\/p><p>Where the last tetanus vaccination was more than ten years ago, or\u00a0the child\u00a0is aged five-ten years old and has not received a \u2018pre-school booster\u2019 then a tetanus vaccine would be\u00a0required.\u00a0Those who have never received a priming course of tetanus vaccine will need a tetanus vaccine and Human Tetanus Immunoglobulin\u00a0administering.<\/p><p><strong>High\u00a0Risk\u00a0Tetanus\u00a0Prone\u00a0Wounds<\/strong>: <\/p><p>Wounds\u00a0requiring\u00a0booster tetanus vaccinations and Human Tetanus Immunoglobulin\u00a0are often extensive injuries, where medical attention would be\u00a0sought\u00a0due to the\u00a0extent\u00a0of the injury\u00a0primarily. Medical professionals will\u00a0administer\u00a0any tetanus booster vaccinations and\/or\u00a0Human Tetanus Immunoglobulin as per national guidelines, in line with person specific risk assessment.\u00a0Not everyone will require the same treatment.\u00a0<\/p><p>Anyone who has sustained an injury where heavy contamination\u00a0has occurred should always seek medical advice, examples\u00a0of heavy\u00a0contaminated\u00a0wounds, would be significant\u00a0wounds\u00a0with\u00a0direct contact\u00a0of,\u00a0or\u00a0embedded,\u00a0soils\u00a0and manure, significant animal attacks with multiple wounds\u00a0would be another example.<\/p><p>For those who have sustained any large or deep\u00a0wound or burn, or those where bleeding cannot be controlled\u00a0should attend an Accident &amp; Emergency\u00a0Department or\u00a0call 999.\u00a0Whereas\u00a0person has an existing wound or burn and have developed\u00a0any\u00a0symptoms of infection, they should attend an Accident &amp; Emergency Department or call 999. <\/p><p>Severely immunosuppressed persons, despite full\u00a0tetanus\u00a0immunisation history, should seek medical advice as\u00a0additional\u00a0booster vaccines may be\u00a0required.<\/p><p>Where tetanus vaccines are administered following injury due to no\u00a0initial\u00a0priming course, further doses to conform to\u00a0the United Kingdom\u00a0immunisation schedule should be arranged with your GP.\u00a0<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-are-the-symptoms-of-tetanus\">What are the symptoms of tetanus?<\/h2><p>Symptoms of tetanus infection\u00a0include:<\/p><ul><li>Fits (seizures)<\/li><li>Fever (high temperature)<\/li><li>Sweating<\/li><li>Fast heartbeat<\/li><li>Problems swallowing<\/li><li>Breathing difficulties<\/li><li>Muscle spasms<\/li><li>Stiff jaw (lockjaw)<\/li><\/ul><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-when-do-you-need-a-tetanus-to-travel\">When do you need a tetanus to travel?<\/h2><p>Check out the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/vaccinations\/travel-vaccinations\/travel-vaccination-advice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NHS&#8217;s travel vaccination advice<\/a> to see if you need to get a tetanus vaccination prior to foreign travel<\/p><p>You should always seek\u00a0appropriate\u00a0medical\u00a0advice for any injury,\u00a0or\u00a0illness concerns.
