Thinking of\u00a0keeping chickens?\u00a0The experts at \u00a0British Hen Welfare Trust<\/a> explains how much room you need <\/strong><\/p> Hens are sociable\u00a0animals\u00a0and\u00a0need\u00a0to\u00a0be part of\u00a0a flock, so the minimum number you should keep is three.\u00a0<\/p> Always give your\u00a0hens as much\u00a0room\u00a0as possible. The minimum\u00a0space\u00a0hens need is 30cm\u00b2\u00a0of floor space inside the house, 25cm of perch space and an outside run space of 1m\u00b2\u00a0of for ex-caged hens and 2m\u00b2\u00a0for ex-free-range hens, plus room to free range each day.\u00a0<\/p> Choose a house which can accommodate more birds than you intend to get, so if you want three hens, buy a house that can accommodate at least four to give them plenty of space. <\/p> Wood is traditionally used to make coops, but plastic coops are also available and are easier to – and keep – clean. <\/p> Looking to buy a coop?
